Ok latest on the C180, battery light came on last week, replaced the alternator and everything is fine now.
I still have a poor throttle response, tomorrow I will swap out the MAF, the questions I have are these,
1 there is a sensor on the right hand side of the engine, it takes a reading off the inlet camshaft sprocket, what is the possablitity of this sensor failing?

2 at the front top of the engine there is a cap that bolts on with three bolts, sits in front of the inlet sprocket on the outside and has a plug on it, do these fail?

Jib,
1.This is the camshaft position sensor, explained here[It is unlikely that a failed camshaft position sensor will cause the engine not to start, as this particular sensor only times the injector pulses. When this sensor is disconnected the point at which the injector fires can be seen to 'shift' giving an incorrect point at which the fuel is delivered behind the inlet valve.]so if this fails it is possible your engine response would suffer as the injection timing would be out.
2.This is the inlet camshaft adjuster soleniod which varies the cam timing as the engine revs rise but it would affect the engine response to any noticeable degree in a narrow rev band.
If either of these was faulty a fault code would be stored so having the codes read would point you in the right direction as there are many other faults which could cause a lack of response.

George has given a super explanation of that, you could disconnect the MAF try it and see what happens.
Only on the odd car does any fault codes need clearing, best to try it for a week if you can first

Goerge many thanks for the reply.

Ive have removed the camshaft sensor plug before starting the car and it ran as before.

I have another MAF to fit tomorrow, I was also thinking of replacing the camshaft sensor with another one in stock.

whats the possiblitly that it could have jumped a tooth on the sprockets??

I have disconnected the MAF with the engine running and the engine dies, so Im assuming the MAF is ok but as above.

Unless you have had the cam chain tensioner out I don't think there is any possiblity that your camchain has jumped, believe me if it had and you started the engine it would sound like a diesel as the valves would be hitting the pistons.

Just as an aside, there is a known problem with oil leaking from the camshaft adjuster unit into the wiring harness. Pull the plug off and check for any oil inside. I wondered why you had queried this part and just thought I would mention it...

The oil works its way back to the ECU, and the usual first signs are a lambda sensor fault code.
