Hi everyone

My 1996 C180 has some problems

My speedometer is not working which has now stoppepd the odometer and tripometer, and the display which is on the fuel and temp side is not working either?? , Would the speedometer mean a faulty cluster or something else?

Non cable driven speedo's take pulses from the road wheel sensors, as the ABS light is not on the fault will be in the cluster or the sender from the engine.

That makes more sense, you understand that I will have to shoot you.

Is the ABS light on when you start the car.

could be one or both of the two cables that plug into the back of your instrument cluster have come loose, it's unlikely though, as they clip in very tightly,

was anyone messing with it recently ? they are easy to remove if you want to check

just make sure NOT to have the key in the I or II postition (ie, have NO power going to the panel while removing the cluster at any stage).

you don't need to remove the steering wheel, just pull it out using the mercedes tools part number is W 140 589 02 33 00

or use strong wire coat hangers shaped as long L's

cheers

Yup already had a nosey this afternoon and all seems fine back there, i also had the brake light on and brake pad light on which wouldn't go off, which seems to have been sorted by changing the fuse on top of a big relay thingy under the bonnet (i'd hoped it would sort out the speedo too:)

that big thing is the OVP, (over voltage protection relay)

check the contacts on the bottom of it, make sure they are really clean

cheers

actually you might consider changing your ovp relay for a new one, or checking the solder joints on the inside (could have come loose)

ovp relay failures can cause very weird electronic issues

Don't know if this has anything to do with it but the front and rear pads are going in for a change tomorrow as they are all low, would that cause ABS problems?

The pads do not affect this problem you could ask them to clean the speed sensor pick ups in the hubs

Okay will get them to do that, i am a little concerned as to why the fuse had blown in the OVP relay but it hasn't blown again since.

The OVP relay should have 12v on pins 87 also the ABS pump needs 12 volts on the main feed, this should be checked, but none of this should affect the speedo
