My car failed its 1st MOT - because of wear on the fan-belt - Car has only done 15,000 miles. MB suggest that I have had a frontal bump - which never happpened and also surely if this occurred whilst the car was parked there should be damage to the bumper - I fail to see the validity of such a claim -desperate for any other explanations?

Hello and welcome to the forum.

Since when does the Fan belt become part of the MOT, I have never heard of this one

Any other views on this one

depends if the belt is the multi ribbed one that also drives the power steering.

It will be the ribbed one on that car, but to say the car has had frontal damage does not make sense, as you could see it, and it would have to be bad to go that far back

Sorry to ask, but what sex is the poster of the question, if female go to another MOT station.

Trouble is really badly smashed cars do make it back on the road, it can be difficult to know this even with HPi etc.

I assume the 15,000 was done from new by one owner, I would ask why they came to that.
I did do some work years ago refurbishing alloy wheels, we would go to Southampton to do all the Italian cars, they would come in from itally and sit for up to 3 years before going to UK dealers.
Some cars and I remember one day watching two lancia fall off the front top of a transporter, both landed upside down, 2 days later they went through the hanger and came out as new cars. Some poor bugger would end up owning that car.

This makes no sense to me either. Unless they are saying it was badly pranged, put back together cosmetically but something is still out of alignment, in which case it needs stripping down and sorting out. Chances are, it would only be a mounting bracket somewhere. As you say, wear on a fan belt is unusual on mercs. I've never changed one.
