Hi everyone,

I am new here and hoped I could get some sound advice. The first car I ever drove after passing my test was a C-class; twas my fathers company car!

I have recently sold my Alfa and am contemplating buying either a C180/200 coupe or a CLK. Around the 2000 - 2002 reg so not to cost me too much.

Does anyone have any suggestions over which would be better and why?

Thanks

Depend how much are you willing to pay. CLK costs more in the region of £30K while the new C-class is only £23K, so that the different price bracket for a 2000-2002. Plenty of 2000 C-class around in the region of £2K and clk probably more £4-6K.

An alternative way of looking at it: a C-class coupé with the glass roof and fully loaded with extras, cost about the same as a bottom of the range CLK; so it could depend which is more important to you, all the fun toys, or the extra luggage and passenger space. The back seats of the C-class coupé are NOT roomy enough for adults for a long journey, nor is the boot big enough for 3-4 adults' luggage.

I think that with a C class you need to get an 2003 car on, the CLK although C class based seems to have less faults on here anyway

Bare in mind that the CLK comes with many items as standard that would be extras in the C class & C class coupe & the general feel & quality of the interior is more in line with the e class.

I would really suggest W209 220 or 270 as they are very well built, alot of space, look very trendy, they have more than enough space for a coupe. I adore the interior.

CLK is generally a very nice place to be in and drives nice, its not a drivers car though as the handling is a little on the downside.

I have 230K W208 and love it, gives me around 28MPG around town and then near 40MPG on motorway.

Thanks for the responses guys.

So far I have looked at a CLK, Y reg with 92k on the clock, that was up for £4,500. The C class coupes have been 02/52 plates and around the £6,000 mark.

I obviously want something that looks good but also holds its value fairly well; having just lost £2,000 on a 52 plate Alfa in 12 months I need to be careful.

I imagine the best place to look is Autotrader? I hoped there would be a sales/wanted section on here.

Remember that VED (Road Fund) is going up substantially on CO2 based car registrations (as opposed to cc based registrations).
This occurred in April 2001 I think, so a pre-CO2 registered car will be a flat £200 as opposed to £300 or maybe more for a post April 2001 car.
PS, IMHO the CLK is a great machine.

I lost £20K in 10 years on a C-class and £4K in 6 months on a E-class and £10K in 4 years on an slk. Don't get the impression, because it a Merc it will not depreciate.

My best friend lost £60k on a 140 S600 some 12 years ago and 4k miles. That takes some beating :(:(
