Hi all

Grateful for any advice as i,m replacing the rear brake pads on my 1996 c180, I took the wheel off and had a quick look, its the single pin , am I correct in saying once i remove the pin the pads should come out or do I have to split the caliper , i,m getting the pads, pin and spring from MB

any advice would be fantastic

once you have the wheel off take a look at the back of the calipers holding the pads onto the disc. there should be two bolts that need to be unscrewed with ring spanners (17mm if memory serves me correct, but I could be wrong), once they are out you can slide the caliper carefully off of the disc and then support it so the brake pipe isn't straining.

take a look at these photos to give you a better idea

http://www.niallbrady.com/mycar/c220/brake_discs/

once the caliper is OFF, the pads themselves are simple to remove just grab the two ends of the spring that holds each one in place and pulkl them out, replace them and the disc at the SAME time, and in addition, when refitting the brake pads, use new bolts.

cheers

Not necessary to remove the calipers on your rear brakes, punch out the retaining pin and withdraw the pads with the caliper in situ.

really ? i didn't know that,

however from memory it was always recommended to change discs/pads at the same time

is that true ?

If the discs are not worn out (measurement on hub of disc) no need to replace the disc just the pads.

If new discs are fitted new pads muist be fitted.

Normally 2 sets of pads to 1 set of discs , but with the pitting and corrosion found on the back face of the rear discs on these cars the discs often have to be replaced with each set of pads, basically because the rear pads last so long .
