Hello, I'm a newcomer to the MB forums. I'm a BMW person through and through (Yes, spit and throw abuse, but I've worked for them and cut my teeth with the BMs so it's always been a logical thing for me to own them as I've been surrounded with lots of BMW specialists and access to cheaper parts for them).

However, I've recently aquired a 1996 C180 (W202 i think?) to tinker with, I have no need for the car but I got it for next to nothing so thought it could be a project to tidy up.

A major problem I'm having with the car is very poor running when warm. The car has been around several so called 'Mercedes specialists', none of whom have been able to sort the problem. I'm hoping for a wee bit of advice here to get me pointing in some direction.

The problem stemmed from vehicle refusing to start. It was passed around several of those 'specialists' and had work carried out to the extent of one of them replacing the head gasket. In the end the non start was caused from a blocked catalyst. Exhaust was replaced and all appeared fine. However on the first long run I took the car on, all was not well. After a few miles I felt a miss coming into the car, the further I went the worse it appeared to get. (It was actually on a motorway and the car would simply not pass 50mph). Problem got worse to the extent I pulled into a filling station and switched it off. It was very difficult to start and once started was hardly pull away at all. It's been on a several peoples diagnostics, someone charged £170 to replace a crankshaft sensor as this is apparantly located at the rear of the engine on these models? but to no avail.

I don't want to plunge much more money into the car becuase it's simply not worth it so any help or guidance regarding this problem would be very much appreciated.

Cheers in advance for any info :D

Hmm, Sounds a little odd!

Surely these 'specialists' can tell the difference between a knackered head gasket and a blocked cat?!?!

Anyway... My advice would be to get it down to a local indy garage, with STAR equipment, to read the fault codes. If you've already changed the CPS, then MAF is my best guess.

Whereabouts are you?

Oh, and welcome!!!
(both to the forum, and to MB ownership!)

Thanks for the speedy reply. I'm in Northern Ireland. I was thinking about the possibility of the Air Flow Meter. There are very few places around here that have proper diagnostics for the MB vehicles. BMW and VW Group cars, the diagnostics are in abundance not so much the MBs. My concern was the fact that the head gasket has been done and I'm wondering if timing has possibly been upset but I believe the car runs too well when cold for it to be that.

I'm fortunate that I haven't had to call upon one yet, but the STAR machines (Mercedes-Benz's diagnostics) are, apparently fantastic.

I can only suggest that you get down to a dealer and get plugged in! Shouldn't cost too much, just to get the codes read, I wouldn't have thought...
