Ive only done 8000 miles in 14 months from new in my C180 service indicator says service due in another 5000 miles, which means it will be about 2 years without a service is this OK?

golly, you must drive with a light right foot. The service interval is computerised and based on mileage and time, on average a city driven C180 will require a service every 8,500 - 9,000 a motorway driven vehicle every 12 - 13,000 depends on how it is driven aswell.

This is normal though if you pass a certain period of time unserviced (unsure how long) the service counter then reverts to months and days rather than miles.

Most of my journeys are short about 12 miles of which 9 on A roads and 3 on city roads off peak.

Don't worry. The car has an oil quality sensor so if it's happy, relax. Most oils will last a lot longer than the stated intervals anyway. As for everything else, few things really need attention after 2 years.

I would consider changing the oil every year as most of your journeys are short runs. This is the best and cheapest way of protecting the engine and gives peace of mind.

I do a similar mileage to you annually and have the oil changed with semi-synth at each MOT and any other service items that are required at the same time.

If I was running the car to longer intervals I would definitely use fully synth oil but this would be a bit of a waste with my usage.

It certainly used to be the case but these days I'm not so sure. Caddliacs do 100k between changes and modern lubricants like the new Mobil1 should last
well over 12 months /10k, especially in a new engine.

As it approaches 2 years it will switch to days starting at 30 days to service. For one thing, MB recommend brake fluid is changed every 2 yrs, and the car has to have a service within the last 2 years to qualify for Mobilo. There are lots of opinions about oil lifetime - in my view a significant factor is how long you intend to keep the car. It's very nice to change the oil for a future owner, but you won't get any money back for doing it.

Considering your type of use (shortish journeys), you are getting surprisingly long service intervals. My C270CDi would have gone to 20000 miles although I gave in and had it services at 18500, however that was pretty well all long motorway runs. Its use is more mixed now and its dropping mile for mile from the 13000 miles that appeared after ASSYST was reset.

Hi JBerks.
I would certainly extend the service intervals if I were using fully synth, but I prefer to change the oil annually and semi-snth gives me this option.

Old habits die hard I know, but I'm more comfortable with this situation and its more convenient to combine MOT and service which is another plus.

Given the mileage that you do annually I would certainly go by the ASSYST.
