not my car but a friends. Been off the road for more than a year with this problem so I said I would try to help. She says that she got in the car and went to start up like usual and out of the blue no start. Details are: it has the funky big plastic key with the infra red square block that fits the switch on the dash. Not a key as such. OK on inserting the key the steering lock disables as normal. Whenturned to the run posn the dash lights up as normal but a clicking can now be heard from under the bonnet. Bit like a starter solenoid clicking. Still clicking: click... click... click turn key to start posn against spring pressure and ...no start. All lights still on dash. Apparently sometimes it does start but not often. Battery is new. Starter motor is new. Alternator is new. The car will not start using jump leads but will bump start fine. I'm thinking ign switch. Any ideas guys

Thanks for responding so quick. Taken another look and have more info which might help.
Have ruled out the ign switch which now seems to be doing wot its supposed to. When moving to start posn the engine actually turns over about 20 degrees and stops. If held in the start posn it keeps repeating this process. So I deduce that the starter is engaging ok but for some reason will not turn the engine over properly for a start. The battery is fine which was my first thought so perhaps you are right about the relay. Can you give me an idea as to where to find it. Apparently the Lady owner took it to Mercedes and they changed one of the relays to no avail Not sure which one though so at the beginning of my diagnosis I had discounted this relay.

There is one thing from memory, that is the starter ring needs to be lubricated, I am sure that is listed
