My C180 (62k 1995) has a tapping noise from the engine, which is louder when cold and more pronounced around 3k revs or so. I suspect the lifters, but has anyone come across this - I'm not familiar with Mercs at all, maybe this is common? It has a MB FSH so oil has been changed at the right intervals.

My 190e was doing this (from about 98k miles) Very noisy when cold, (usually) less noisy when warmed up. This was the hydraulic valve lifters though. Just had the cyl head overhauled and its sorted it out nicely (tho mine has now covered 160k!) Andy has made a few replies on this subject so maybe do a quick search...

Hi, I have a 230E auto from 1985 (160 kmiles). On two occasions I got the tappet sound that you describe. On each occasion, I satisfied myself that the problem came from the hydraulic valve lifters. On one occasion I took the rocker gear apart,(not difficult at all) & tested each lifter, and replaced one (£7 each, I think). On other occasion, I guessed that some gunge had lodged in the lifter, so I just did an oil and filter change, and the clean oil was enough to 'flush' it throgh, and the noise disappeared. All went well from that point on.

sounds like the timing chain tensioner to me, but usually the noise is more pronounced when engine is hot, have you recently checked the obvious? like the oil levels?

Thanks, I'll check the tensioner - used to belts on French cars, forgot chains make noise!
