My other half has taken a shine to my "new" W124 1995 E300D Estate, auto.
She would like a C180 circa 1998 approx.
My old 190E manual had a poor gearchange so we think an auto would be best. Not sure if the box is the same quality as in the W124 though.
Any views welcome.

I have just bought a c180 auto and although I have driven other autos I have never owned one. I have to say it's fantastic . Even better after I had the ATF changed. Most of the time the only indication of a change is when the rev counter moves!

Once you have driven an auto, you will never ever want to drive a manual again.

Hello

Agree with others the Autos especially in Mercs are almost a must. Driving them in Traffic you wonder why anyone has a manual.

The wifes A class (A210 AMG) is Manual as she just didn't want a manual, but I think it woudl suit it far better.

I doubt I will go back to manuals, don't see the point for our roads.

Manual, I would recommened. W202 has very good manual gearbox.

Auto gerboxes are very complex systems and there is lot of possibility something will go wrong especially with older cars. If this happens, there is nothing you can do yourself. The auto gerabox repair bill is lilkely to be £2-4k (all of those that I have seen have been in this range) and you might throw away the car.

I would consider auto gerbox only if I was buying a S class car, or perhaps also a new E class.

Gearshifting is not problem at all, quite contrary it is fun.

Pose.

They are complex but looked after are good for 200k+. Also, there is no clutch to worry about chaging. Sure a repair can run into big money but a breaker unit would be a lot less. Plus I dare say that a manual box would be costly to repair too.

True - but pressing the damn clutch isn't. Sat it traffic the the LR the other day, trying to keep it smooth whilst creeping forward - what a pain and all the time thinking I'm burning out the clutch. Then setting off, especially in a diesel, where you need to change more often and it's 1st,2nd, 3rd back to 2nd stop at the roundabout, into 1st back to 2nd round the roundabout into 3rd just in time to stop at the lights and back into 1st off again - where's the fun in that?
In mine, press the pedal, lift off the pedal, press it a bit, now a bit further, off the pedal again. In an ideal world with clear roads, a manual can be fun. Everywhere I drive these days it's a pain in the left leg.

Auto EVERY time.

As has been said - once you have driven automatics, going back to a 'wiggly stick' isn't worth a consideration. More time to simply observe what is going on around you.

Hi,
As i have both manual and auto w202 c class, I would personally go for a manual gearbox with the 4 cylinder engine but some people don,t like the handbrake foot pedal with the manual box.
Anything bigger i would go for an auto everytime though most times there is no manual option.
