Hi all I have just registered today. I have noticed for some time now, that my motor is consuming too much fuel. I have had a service done at great cost by the loxal indie (£45.00 labour and £33.00 for the oil 5.5 litres and my own genuine filter). Its made no difference. For example if I put £25.00 worth of fuel, the needle on the petrol gauge in the dash shows just over half a tank the middle mark. Local I'm getting around just under 100 miles. Is this right? I drive with great care but it still gives me this mileage. I tried different garages but to no avail. 28.440 litres. I'm only getting 16 miles to the gallon local. Is this right? I have been reading the forums about the EGR could this be the problem? Please help it would be appreciated so much.

Hello and welcome with your 202.

!6 is too low, but the car should be misbehaving at that figure, IE, hunting, smoking, hesitant. The EGR valve in the stuck mode would show up as lumpy idle.

Some other 202 owners will come on later in the day.

Hi there many thanks for your reply. I'm sorry I do not have the digital odometer mileage reading for fuel consumption as my motor is the classic version of c180. Also it was misbehaving for example after the clutch overhaul the cars engine was spluttering slightly. I had new spark plugs fitted and that has done the job. But the consumption is quite high. In idle mode I am able to hear in the drivers cabin a ticking noise very slight and frequent almost sound like tappets. could this be the problem?

Hi I just started the car cold, left it running for a while, then drove off on first gear at 1.5 revs all the way to end of my street, the car did appera to be hunting.

Firstly - to be honest £78 for a service is a real bargain. I normally count myself luck if I get away from an indie with a bill under £250. Mercs do cost more to service than Fords I'm afraid. The parts are more, the oil is better - it all costs more. People have been know to pay £1k+ depending on what is needed.
As for your problem. Yes 16mpg is low. But I've seen less than that. It really depends on where and how you drive. If you spend your time in London style congestion, it could actually be considered good. I remember one bad run home in my E240 and the computer showing 13! It is a heavy auto with a relatively large engine. So, it will use a lot at idle and takes a fair amount of energy to overcome inertia.
The idle ticking could simply be the noise of the cat or the injection system. Not necessarily a cause for concern.

Your poor running is what I'd be looking at. This may well affect your consumption anyway. You could have a sensor down or a sticky valve, a vacuum leak - who knows. The key thing is to get a proper diagnostic done by someone who knows mercs and has a computer to plug it into.

hi many thanks for that. i do agree with what you are saying given the age of my motor and the mileage. However although it is a manual, saloon, 1.8 please could you recomend a reputable garage that can just check it over for me without cost.
Also, I will be going to London tomorrow and fill it up and see what total mileage i get there and back. I usually get 320 miles, with a full tank at just under £50. But I would like to cure this once and for all as the bills have trebled. Im sure there is a cure to this. Its a pretty basic model classic no extras so it should be relatively easy to diagnose.

I will let you know how much it gives overall.

Hello,
I don't know any garage that will carry out work for nothing. At the end of the day you get what you pay for.

I have a C280 straight six and I get little more than 320 miles on a tank before I fill up so averaging around 27 mpg but I suppose my engine isn't working so hard. Having said that mine's an auto. I never use supermarket petrol preferring Shell, BP, Texaco or Esso.

My old 1998 C180 would return about 250 miles to a tankful on supermarket fuel around town but more on the more expensive brands like shell optimax I think it was called, it was thirsty probably with it been under powered, my ML 270 diesel only does 24 to the gallon.

Hi,
My 230k i get approx 320-350miles a tank the C180 is the most uneconomical engine in the c class 202 but you still should be getting more than you are

I bought my c180 manual at 2 years old with 24000 on the clock, after running it for 8 years I sold it to another family member with 203,000 on the clock.
It consistently returned 32 / 34 on general run around and 37 / 39 on long runs.
Typical journey for me would be Tyneside to Aberdeen, with 2/3 days town work and back - average about 36mpg.
Oil consumption was about a litre after 4 / 5000 miles.
This had to be the easiest car to service I have ever owned, even draining the sump can be done without getting on the ground under the car.
It still does not burn oil or use excessive fuel, the engine internals are still free from varnish even.
Use oem parts and good quality oil and you can change all your normal filters(oil, air) for about £30.
I would get 50,000 miles from a set of pads and discs, and change cost about £110 (oem bits from Euro), time about 30 mins per wheel.
Buy a Haynes and you will see how easy some the routine work is.

I should maybe clarify, when I refer to oilburning I mean in copious amounts which result in white smoke issuing from the exhaust, indicating worn bore, rings etc.
I did not have any symtoms of this, oil can disapear for a variety of reasons, not least as some of the scavenge from the crankcase breather.
All engines will consume some oil, some more than others.
I consider that about a litre every 4/ 5000 miles to be quite reasonable.
This level of consumption has never varied for the entire time I had the car.

I ran my previous diesel for 180Kmls never needed oil between services (every 10K)

My cclass a 96 model does around 250+ on a full tank, although it used to do around 270 when i first got it, this is due to me changing the cat to non oem. although i serviced last month and used some higher octane fuel and some redex it seems to be doing better that 250 now.
(mines a auto though)

Rajinder, you must be doing a lot of town running, I got 420 on run till warning light first came on, about 380 if not doing any significant runs..

I too get around the 400 miles per tank on my 97 C 180, slightly more on long runs, less around town, mines an auto, done 55000.

Wouldn't white smoke be water from a head gasket failure and blue smoke from a worn engine using oil ?

Hi even dealers do not charge for a check on your motors. I know because I have always booked mine when there is something wrong and they point out what needs doing. Going to an indie you could be asking for it. Mercedes checked my car a few months ago and they showed me the evidence that rear subframe bushes, were badly worn and further sugested shock absorbers and a new damper. Got all this renewed by indie used genuine mercedes parts. Total cost inc labour 400 pounds. this also included 4 wheel alignment.
Recently went to another local indie, who claims to be a mercedes specialist and he done the clutch, fitted my own flywheel genuine, and did prop joint and rear links. He thought there was a bit of play in them. Fitted aftermarket parts. The car runs absolutely rubbish. Peter Michaels for this unnecessary job they charged 634.00 inc vat and labour. He also said the clutch needs doing that was when the car had a splutter in the engine. After doing the job car still spluttered and he put it in his report. Ive got it fixed myself.
what gets me is that this car is a basic model merc the most basic car you can get. Its not like the elegance or avant models far from it but you still get ripped off. My choice indie or dealer? Theyre all dodgy anyway. My motor was better before all this work was done. After effect it knocks hard repetively from the rear and front right drivers side, wobbles, and takes too much petrol. Too much headache i say
