I have just bought a '95 C200 that has done 91,000 miles. The box changes fine but the change from 2nd to 3rd is not as smooth as 1st to 2nd or 3rd to 4th. If I back off the throttle as its about to change then its as smooth as the others. Any ideas why?

Also there is a small amount of play in the throttle pedal as you start offf from rest. Should it be there or can I adjust it out?

Thanks. At least I won't waste my time trying to get rid of it.

auto jerks

:D Hi there, this idiotic jerk they say was stupidly designed into the box to drag the gear change longer so the Cat will heat up and run and last longer. What crap I think. I still reckon against all blows from other Benz owners that it was a crap design and unexpected result for the genius designers in Germany. It would have cost them millions to re-run the design and pay for law suits, so they say it was designed to do just that. Crap isn't it? Even a high school student can tell you that auto boxes should be designed to change smoothly without any fuss and if it can be done from 3 to 4, it can also be done fron 2 to 3 and from 1 to 2. Just look at all the Japanese and Korean cars with autos. How do they change? Even the new Benzs don't have this "necessary" jerk anymore and they have learnt their lessons or have found a way to make it smooth. I drive a 1994 C180 and it jerks like hell in the mornings. Great, it helps to wake me up thanks! I also drive a 1997 C180 with the upgraded 5speed auto and the jerk is all gone. Yet it still has the Cat to heatup? Possibly the electronically controlled operation is a lot better and smoother than the old fashioned vacuum assisted operation.
