C200 "Clunk" slowing down

1998 C200 auto estate. Sometimes when coming to a stop there is a very slight clunk which feels like it's the gearbox changing down or the brakes doing something funny. It happens just before coming to a standstill. It stops and goes fine. Anyone know what it is or heard of it??

Hi

Without looking at fault codes or the live data from the EGS control unit I would suspect a problem with the valve chest.

But I wouldn't worry about it at present.

Is it something that can be diagnosed by my local MB service man or will it have to go to a dealer??

Depends if he has the computor program to interagate the EGS system on your vehicle.

I had a new valve unit replaced by a 'reputable' MB dealer in my 5spd last year. (1997 c36 @69k miles)

I notice that sometimes I get a 'clunk' slowing down and a 'lurch' when gently accelerating when one of the gears, 2nd or 3rd, engages/disengages. It is fairly often, but I could not easily reproduce it at will.

I saw on the MB website that garage repairs come with a 2 yr warranty earlier this week. I don't know if a garage would actually honour it, although a 2 year warranty is on all products according to EU law!

My question is should I rush back to the garage and demand a replacement one. I have never been really happy with the gearbox since the repair, but it has never been so bad that I felt I could realistically take it back, if you know what I mean and now I am beginning to wonder if I should do something about it while I may be able to get satisfaction. The problem sounds similar to JP's gearbox fault.
