The actual fault is a faulty cyclinder head where through bad design the exhaust valve seat burn away. this is a known fault and fully documented in the MB service program, the last man pushed hard and MB are paying most of it. This is not your fault, and no way could you cause it. It should come under the fit for the purpose it was intended for trading act.
This is almost an identical story to me, I have a C200K Sports Coupe as well 36 months old, 35 K on the clock. Dealer tells me only a new head will cure the problem at £3800, Mercedes have rejected a goodwill application I await a three way split offer. Could all owners with this problem not get together and create some real pressure on Mercedes I am sure that Clarkson would love to know. I am not sure what the site protocol is about making contact but if you are interested post a reply.
