Guys, I have a 1997 C200 5 speed auto, the MPG I am getting around town seems poor, under 20mpg. Although on a decent run it almost doubles. From a full tank of fuel I get around 220 miles. Does this seem excessive? Most of my driving is around town. I used to just leave it in D, but recently have been using 3 & 4 in traffic. Is this MPG about right for the age of the car around town?

Cheers

Good username my son!

Is your gearbox in S or W (or E or S or whatever it has?) (how about that for or repetition):)

I have been keeping it in S.

It does not make much difference in S or W, to be truthful if there is no black smoke comming out of the back, then nothing is wrong.

The most efficiant running temperture is 100c,if the engine is not getting this warm that could be the problem.

I thought that it holds the gears longer in S, thus MPG would suffer around town.

They only hold the gears when cold,no holding when warm, that applies to W or S start

The position of the throtle is directly related as to when the box will shift up
so at light throttle openings it will change up as soon as possible.

Temp seems OK. No smoke, servicing OK. I'll try it in W for a while and see if it make any difference. I only average 6000 mile per year most of which is around town, to & from work. Does anyone think <20MPG is OK?

20 is a bit poor for a C200. I bought one, a 99 C200 5speed auto, I don't drive it much as it is for my better half. She drives "normally" but only a few miles + in traffic but still does about 300 miles on a tank (about 55 litres to fill up - not completely empty). This works out about 24.8 MPG. I took it to Devon & got about 360 from a tank, not going over 90 (sorry officer).

Righto, my mistake. I've never driven one as old diesels don't have this switch!

I was under the misapprehension that it (the switch) affected the shift points for a given throttle opening.

Every day is a school day! :)

There is nothing wrong with your post, Electronic boxes with lock up did not start till 97 ish, and there was no lock up bere that unless you engaged 1-2
Keep posting,it make me think.
