I have a 99 C200 estate with 82000 on the clock.  My first Merc ever, love the car.

Gearbox has now developed a fault; when I kickdown to overtake there is an increasing delay in it selecting the lower gear, followed by a real kick as it finally engages. Then on change from 3rd to 4th (and on 2nd to 3rd when accelerating from a standstill) I it appeas to be slipping as it goes into the higer gear, getting massive over revving followed by kick as it engages....

Went back to non-merc dealer from whence I had bought the car last year who says that its all a sealed unit, might be fluid level, might be "loose bands" (?) and that he would find out and call me back.....which of course he hasnt !

Meanwhile the car is getting worse to drive....

Advice please, what is likely reason, any idea of cost to replace, do I have to go to Merc dealership, do I need to consider a recon gearbox (does this type of thing exist) ?

Check the fluid level.  Low level will play havoc with changes.

The fluid NEEDS changing.  The box is not sealed, but "filled for life", which will be short if the fluid is not changed at 60 - 70K.
The recommended MB fluid change is 100k, by which time the valve body may well be sticking beyond repair.
