C200 Petrol W205 2015: Is there a reason that the NOX sensor must be replaced?

Is there a reason that the NOX sensor must be replaced? At the last service by a reputable Mercedes independent in July on my C200 petrol W205 2015, Star diagnosed a faulty NOX sensor. (There are still none available). The ECU was patched to ignore the fault and the car has performed perfectly since. On my C270CDi I did the modification to disable the EGR which impacts NOX emissions. Is there a good reason why the sensor should be replaced?

To comply with euro 6 emissions regulations. I see it everyday now though , owners are having the ad blu and nox written out of the ECU data due to costing issues and repeat failures.

And how many used cars are out there now, that's been adjusted, for sale ,I wonder . ?

Also what amazes me is the amount of youngens flying about in heavily remapped corsas etc ,spewing out cloud upon cloud of black smoke and that's legal. ?
