I am in a bit of a dilema.I have owned a merc c200 elegance/auto for 6 years now.It is a w plate, and the old shape. So far it has been everything I would have expected from a quality car, however it now has 175,000 miles on the clock.Valuations from garages have been poor,£1000-2000.If its worth as little as this then perhaps I should just keep it and deal with the repairs as they come but I am worried that there might be some really expensive items of work that could cost a fortune and cost more than my cars worth.
Anyone got advice or experience of what type of potential work that might be required on a c200 with this kind of milage.
many thanks

If servicing and routine inspection is kept up to date why should things go wrong. Granted some items wear out. Some items do go wrong. But with a Mercedes there is statistically less likelehood of that happening than your average motor.:)

And don't forget that an awful lot of genuine Mercedes parts are horrendously CHEAP!

Hi Ian,
How many miles do you feel it is realistic to expect from this engine

How long is a piece of string?
If you look after the car,it will look after you. I'm not saying it will cost nothing, but it will cost less in the long run than your average rep-mobile.

Keep in touch with all the postings on here past and present and you will have the greatest knowledge database regarding your c-class you could ever wish.:D

8 months ago i bought a w202 c200 elegance, full of leather, direct from a company, no previous owners,142000 miles 14 merc stamps in the book, last one 139000 miles, with 4 new michilin tyres, i was happy to pay £2800 for it and i expect to keep it 10 yrs, i do 4000 miles per year, i see no problem, i will have it serviced every 2 yrs, every 8000 miles and i expect good service out of it....i think your car has a lot of life still in it, with very little future depreciation

I think you have been grossly undervalued. I took this from whatcar valuations, and although not what the trade go by, it isn't to far removed.

Like most things - its probably worth more to you than anyone else. We all know it will run for a long time yet, but put yourself in the shoes of a buyer. Would you spend £4000+ on a car with that mileage given that there are plenty about with much less and you don't know it's history (as well as you do anyway).
Valuations are all very well, but you still need a buyer whose willing to buy and low mileage still counts for a lot.
We have a similar dilemma with our 1995 C220. Low mileage, owned (and loved) it since it was 2 and it's always been impeccably reliable and the body is still mint, but who'd give us more than £1800 for a 12 year old car?

At that value, between the old man and I, especially as we don't really want to part with it anyway, We're just going to keep it as a spare!

The most accurate valuation is Glass's Guide (widely used by the trade). You don't say what year your car is but a 2000 Elegance C200 auto has a part ex price of £2,000 at 150,000 miles (they don't go up to your figure!), in average condition. Here are two links
http://www.glass.co.uk

You can do a basic check with Glass's for free via Vauxhall's website http://www.vauxhall.co.uk/vx/finance/valueyourcar.do

Two things you can do: -
1). Say to yourself has done you well. It owes you nothing. Had the value from it. Sell and get another more recent one. OR
2). Keep it till it goes wrong with something major, then chuck it or sell for spares. No modern car you can buy depreciates as little as yours will. Even a grand a year on repairs would be good value. Only you can decide.
