C200 Won't Start After Recharging Battery.

Excuse All Caps, Disability Issue, Not Shouting.

Hi, I'm A Wrinkly Old Newbie, So Be Gentle!!

I Have A 1995 C200, 90k, Been Looked After Like A Baby By A Specialist Merc Mechanic (works For Distributors!!) So Mechanically It Is In Top Shape, For Certain.

Recently, Through Prolonged Illness And A Lazy Son Who Woulden't Even Run The Engine Every Few Days, Battery Went Flat.

Called Just Local Tyre And Battery Guy Who Said Battery Was Dud (they Always Seem To Be Somehow, Lol) So Replaced The Battery.

But The Car Won't Run Now.

Yes, I Did The Reset Trick With The Remote Key At The Mirror Etc, And It Did Start, But Cut Out Straight Away.
Sometimes It Will Run Once Revved But Dies Once You Stop Revving.
When It Does Run, Several Dash Lights Remain Lit, But I Havn't Checked Exactly Which Ones, Abs For Sure, Alternator (battery Light??) Too.

You Can Guess, I'm Not Exactly A Mechanical Genius, And My Mechanic Is Away In Aussie For 6 Weeks.

To Avoid Being Ripped Off, Can Anyone Give Me Some Pointers As To What Could Be Wrong? Ntw, Checked Every Fusec Etc.

HI

If its been standing for a while with a flat batt you need to reprogram the throtle body. Charge the battery fully, switch on ignition only press the pedal to the metal slowley and evenly and release slowley and evenly twice then switch off.

This should reset the throttle body it doesn't always take first time try two or three times if necissary.

Note this is very sensative to batt voltage the batt must be fully charged

HELLO GUYS,

WELL, THE BATTERY IS BRAND NEW, OUT OF THE BOX AS IT WERE, AND IT HASN'T BEEN RUNDOWN TO ANY EXTENT BY TRYING TO START THE CAR.

THERE IS PLENTY OF FUEL GETTING THROUGH, AND IN FACT THERE IS A STRONG SMELL OF "FLOODING".

THE REPROG OF THE THROTTLE IS RINGING A BELL OR TWO, I RECALL SOMETHING ABOUT THAT FROM MY FRIEND "MR MERC".

THE BATTERY DIED ONCE BEFORE, IT WAS TEN YEARS OLD AND AGAIN ILLNESS CAUSED ME TO LET IT SIT. MY FRIEND BROUGHT ME THE NEW BATTERY THAT TIME AND IT WAS HIM TOLD ME ABOUT RESETTING THE REMOTE LOCKING AND IMMOBILISER BY PRESSING REMOTE TWICE AT THE MIRROR ETC.

NOW YOU MENTION THE REPROG OF THE THROTTLE, HE DID DO SOMETHING ELSE AND ADVISED ME TO DO IT GENTLY, AND IT MIGHT TAKE MORE THAN ONE TRY, BUT I CAN'T RECALL WHAT IT WAS, BUT THE THROTTLE TICKLING IS MAKING SENSE TO ME.

IT'S BEEN SEVERAL HOURS SINCE I TRIED TO START IT, SO THE EXCESS PETROL SHOULD EVAPORATE OVER NIGHT WHICH WILL GIVE ME ANOTHER CHANCE TO TRY TICKLING THE TROTTLE EARLY TOMORROW MORNING. I'LL LET THE STREETS HEAT UP A BIT TOO, OFTEN CONDENSATION ABOUT, AND I MIGHT EVEN CALL SPARKY THE BATTERY BOY TO CHECK THE VOLTAGE, AND BOOST IT IF NEEDS BE.

YER ALL GENTLEMEN, AND NO DOUBT GOOD JUDGES OF WHISKEY TOO, BUT A PINT OF GUINNESS WILL HAVE TO DO IF SHE STARTS, I'LL HAVE WAITING FOR YOU WHEN YOU GET HOME, OK?

She Liked That Ticklin'... Sort Of!

HI ALL,

WELL NOW, I GENTLTY STROKED THAT THROTTLE PEDAL IN A WAY THAT BORDERED ON THE OBSCENE!!

AND IT WORKED, UP TO A POINT.

THE CAR DID START, BUT SOUNDED "ROUGHISH", AND CUT OUT ONCE I LEFT THE THROTTLE BE. THERE ARE NOW JUST TWO LIGHTS REMAINING ON, IN THE DASH PANEL, THE ABS WARNING LIGHT AND THE BATTERY LIGHT.

MY CAR HAD JUST PASSED IT'S NCT, I'M TOLD IT'S MORE STRICT THAN THE MOT BUT I CAN'T DEBATE THAT.
FOR SURE, IT WAS TREATED TO EVERYTHING BUT A MANICURE BY MR MERC BEFORE THE NCT, AND THERE WAS NOTHING WRONG WITH THE CAR, ZERO, NADA, AND IT PASSED THE NCT WITH FLYING COLOURS.

I'M GUESSING, BUT THE MOST IT DID SINCE THEN IS ABOUT 200>>250 MILES THEN IT LAY UP AGAIN, FOR ABOUT 6>>8 WEEKS, AGAIN, THESE ARE APPROXIMATES, BUT ACCURATE ENOUGH.

MY CAR IS NOT ADAPTED FOR DISABLED DRIVING, I CAN STILL MANAGE A STOCK CAR, IT'S NOT EVEN AN AUTOMATIC (UNFORTUNATELY!) BUT I DID NOT TRY TO DRIVE IT TODAY, IN CASE SOMETHING WENT WRONG THEN ME AND THE CAR WOULD BE STRANDED.

I'M CONVINCED THIS IS AN ENGINE MANAGEMENT ISSUE FROM NO BATTERY POWER TO THE "COMPUTERS" OR WHATEVER THEY SHOULD BE CALLED AS THE LAST TIME I DROVE THE CAR IT WAS RUNNING PERFECTLY, AND HAD BEEN GONE OVER FROM TOW HITCH TO TAIL LIGHTS.

ANY MORE SUGGESTIONS? NOW NOW, APART FROM THAT TYPE GUYS!!!

Forgot To Mention, There Are A Couple Of Bleeping Sounds As It Starts, Like Those You Get For Errors When You Boot Up A Pc, Like Two Beeps Means A Graphics Card Issue, Usually??

Update//c200 Won't Start After Charging Battery

HI GUYS,

SORRY I SEEMED TO DROP OFF THE WORLD SUDDENLY, BUT ILLNESS AND OTHER ISSUES GOT IN THE WAY.

WELL, IT IS WORSE THAN I THOUGHT, SEEMS MY SON PUT A POWER BOOSTER PACK ACROSS THE CONNECTED TERMINALS WITH SOMEWHAT EXPECTED DIRE RESULTS.

THE ALTERNATOR WAS FRIED FOR A START, THAT WAS REPLACED BUT PROBLEM REMAINS. THR LAD TRYING TO GET IT GOING HAS BEEN TOLD BY A MERC MECHANIC THAT THE ECU (ENGINE CONTROL UNIT??) MUST ALSO BE FRIED AND WE ARE DEEP IN THE STICKY BROWN STUFF.

SUGGESTIONS VARY BETWEEN GETTING ONE FROM A WRECK TO GETTING A RECON ONE, TO HAVING MY ONE REPAIRED. I LIKE THAT LAST IDEA MOST, FEEL THE ECU WAS PROGRAMMED TO MY CAR AT ASSEMBLY.

I WOULD APPRECIATE ADVICE AND SUGGESTIONS IF ANYONE HAS ANY, ESPECIALLY SOMEONE THAT HAD SIMILIAR PROBLEMS.
I ACCEPT UK/IRL PRICES WILL DIFFER, APART FROM EXCHANGE RATE, BUT ANY BALLPARK FIGURES FOR COST OF A REPAIR?

BTW,, ANY DIFFERENCE BETWEEN AN ECU AND AN "ENGINE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM "WHICH ONE CHAP MENTIONED?:confused: :( :idea: :idea:
