Evening folks,
just wondering if anyone knows if there is a drain plug on the torque converter on the auto box?
It is a 722.699 gearbox.
Also, what’s the oil capacity? And any specific ATF required?
TIA.

Doubtful as they stopped in fitting them to the 5g box in ‘99 / ‘00

Stopped fitting what?
Torque converters or drain plugs?
I assume you mean a drain plug but there was no specificity in your answer.
I also assume that the gearbox has not changed to a semi automatic which would, if I am correct dispense with the torque converter.
I doesn’t change like one of those abominations.

Also, apologies to whomever had to move this thread. I obviously got it wrong

Some torque convertors were fitted with a tiny Allen screw which can be accessed from a rubber bung at the base of the bellhousing, they are extremely tight!
Not all were fitted with the screw and as BC says, stopped fitting a screw in, though my 2005 car didn't have one the replacement TC did and was a A211 part number. If you want to change all the trans fluid and your TC doesn't have a screw it can be sucked out or disconnect the oil cooler pipes and run the car which should pump out the trans oil, this is not recommended though. Mercedes in their wisdom made these trans sealed for life so no need to top up or refill. So doing a complete trans fluid change is near impossible.

Your question was: "if there is a drain plug on the torque converter on the auto box?"

My response was: "Doubtful as they stopped in fitting them to the 5g box in ‘99 / ‘00"

So, yes it was a drain in the torque converter that they stopped fitting in 1999 / 2000 - I had the same box in my W210 and discovered the lack of drain plug when I had the ATF changed. Back when they were new they were "sealed for life" the life wasn't quite as long as Mercedes expected - some were failing within the 3 year warranty period... So Mercedes recommended a 37K ATF changes on the 5G box

My 2014 5 speed auto has a drain plug.
If it has a drain plug it follows that it has a TC.
I've had earlier MB's with no drain plug.
Those also had a TC.

To find out you need to remove the bottom rubber cover, although in truth it isn't a cover as it is a push on cap.
You then need to rotate until you don't see a drain plug to find if you don't have one.
To clarify, it is better to turn the TC as turning yourself wouldn't serve purpose.

:D:D
I see what you did there.
Thank you for making the effort to explain as opposed to making a pithy comment.

It took some time that I didn't have when going through the forum last night - I had threads to move to the correct section (yours included...;)), new members to approve and some spammers to track and dispatch... this isn't my day job...

Digging back in the memory, my 2001 S203 C270 days about 2010, I had the ATF/filter change done, but just the gearbox, the indie did not attempt to also do the TC. From memory GB alone is 4-4.5L of ATF, 7.5L includes the TC.

My 2014 5 speed auto has a drain plug.

The Viano? I never knew they stuck with the 5 speed box. The cars changed to 7 speed many years earlier.

Yes all my 639's (2007 Vito, 2009 V6 Viano, 2006 Vito and this 651 2.1) have all had the 5 speed.
I had a 2005 C320 CDI with a 7 speed.

I wonder if the 447 now has the 7 speed.
