:confused:Today I discovered that I cannot put the larger of the 2 rear seats down. The smaller rear seat (behind driver) is fine but the lever on the 2nd fold-down seat is having no effect and is just loose (usually it requires a fair amount of force to lift the lever which allow rear seats to be folded down). I use the car with seats down every week to accommodate my fishing tackle. I fear that the latch mechanism (similar to doors and boots) has shut incorrectly last time the seat was pushed back into the upright position. I have had all the nuts and bolts out which hold the seat in place but still can’t get good access to the closing mechanism. I am further hampered by the boot cover mechanism, which attaches to the troublesome rear seat. Unfortunately, to remove it you need this seat in the down position. So even when the seat is only held in the car by the latch which is stuck, I still cannot see enough of the latch mechanism to try and prise it open!! Please has anybody any ideas bar taking it to a Merc garage?

The rear of the seat must be removed to get to the locking cable that has gone, I take it that the luggage cover is not still attached.

Hi Television,

The boot cover is still attached (can't be removed with the (stuck) seat stuck upright! Any other ideas - how would I remove the rear of seat?

The smaller one went on mine. Luckily it was under warranty but it's obviously a nightmare as it took the dealer a couple of hours to sort out and a new mechanism had to be ordered from MB. Apparently this is a fairly common problem. Probably best to consult your local indie.

Yes this is a problem, I understand that the rear panel of the seat has to be wrecked to do it, and get to the lock.
This was a bad idea and no other way known as yet

Gents,

Thanks for your inputs. As I feared not much I can do (poor design if you ask me) and I'll end up payng at least £300!

I managed to break my husband's rear seat at the weekend. Exactly the same thing happened.

Now we can't get ANY of the back seats down as the frame for the luggage cover seems to be holding the single and double seats together.

I can't figure out how to take the luggage cover off, so we could at least put half the seat down.

Any ideas? (I'm quite unpopular at the moment )

Hi there,
It's a 1997 E230 estate. I think it's an 'elegance'...

Contemplating my next
I have a Y2000 E320CDI Estate with believe it or not, a stuck rear seat back. It is the smaller offside section, and the working larger section cannot get past it with the load cover element attached. I can sadly you from bitter experience that the load cover cannot be removed when seats upright

Olly at PCS managed to get the back released without trashing it, but the cable is stretched and unservicable. I am quite relaxed about it as the boot is big enough for most things and have only had one instance in the last year when I really could have used the space. I hope to find a replacement from a scrapped car at some point...

Anyone have anunwanted black leather functioning seat back?
