My car is a 2001 version and has a lowish mileage, 22000. The time to next service B jumped from 6000 miles to 28 days. If I changed the oil myself now and again, would the time to service have carried on counting down to zero miles rather than switching to days? How easy is it to change the oil? Any special tools? I regularly change the oil on my older Renault.
Any help would be gratefully appreciated.

oil changes are relatively straight forward remove underpanel, sump plug, filter in black plastic bobbin under engine cover, special tool needed for removel or mark with pen for refit and use oil filter belt remover tool, replace filter,£200 saved, remember to use quality oil as the dealers dont, also measure it going in as thers no dipstick

Thank you turbospud, I will give it a go. Will the time to next service run down to zero changing the oil and not be time limited? I could change the oil and reset the assyst I suppose.

I'm intrigued by this - how does the special tool do away with the need to to mark with pen for refit? I can't visualize that at all.

your service meter is miles and time dependant. if you exceed the milage counter/time unit, it counts down in miles as you will need to service before the time dependant items need changing. as you do few miles your service meter is progammed to count down in days as your time dependant items need to be done at a certain time frame window as opposed to milage.

things like brake fluids need changing at certain times to prevent it going bad. coolant fluid is the same but the time between changes is about 15 years i think. like your airbags etc. so as the car is programmed to let you know when a service is due, this is how it counts down.

so to answer your question, no, it wouldn't make any differnce changing your oil. It will still count down in days.

that said, changing your oil wont damage your car so by doing so wont be a problem.

the filter bobbin has a torque setting,if you mark with a pen before removal and realign when refitting it should be the same, allowing you to use the belt strap, hope this helps, once you start into it youll see

Slinky has a point - sure you can change the oil and it won't be a problem, but at 5 years , MB recommend a coolant and brake fluid change too. You may also benefit from an air and fuel filter change. I am not sure what else they do on a B service, lubrication, checks etc but you will miss out on this.
I recently had a major service done at a specialist and was pleasantly surprised at the cost - I don't think I would have saved that much against doing it myself and I know everything that needed to be done, has been.
