Hi
I have a new (1700 mile now) c220 cdi.

Is it possible that the weather affects the performance as my engine seems much smoother and quieter in the wet.

On my engine on the offside there is a black box with a knob on it marked 75% 100%. What is this for.
Thanks

Alec

Your Mercedes
A diesel
In the wet and cold, the intercooler will be packing more air into the cylinders so making the engine produce more power at lower revs which in turn will make the engine smoother.
In addition the cylinder temperatures will be cooler so this is good for longevety also.

It's like the 'water spray' switch on a Subaru Impreza STi which sprays cold water onto the intercooler - just as dieselman says it lowers the intake temperature increasing the density of the air and making a bigger 'bang' thus the feeling of more power.

Don't know about the 75% - 100% knob on the engine, mines a 202 shape car.

questions c220 cdi

Thank you all for your replies.

Now I know why I cannot turn the knob!

In relation to the wet performance I am aware that cold or wet air can improve things but is there anything my dealer can do in setting up the engine which will improve smoothness and refinement and general engine noise.

My car is nice in the wet but not as refined in the dry. My previous car a Peuget 406 HDI was much quieter in general running.

Regards

Alec

I would give it longer to settle, the diesel improves a lot after around 10,000, they also tend to use a bit of oil when new.
After all it is designed to last for 500,000 miles plus
