i have a 99 c220cdi 126 bhp and several people that i know have fitted after market tuning chips/boxes.
has anyone tried one/ should avoid whatever!
Thanks
Seriously though - I fitted an Alpin box to my W202 2000 C220 CDi - I bought from DMS because they appeared to have a good spread of knowledge about tuning boxes - I didn't want anything permanent on the car and I wanted smoother power delivery and more grunt of course.
No problems at all from the box - took it off when servicing it and no trace found by the dealer.
The changes were fabulous, much smoother to drive, bit more oomph and better fuel consumption. Couldn't really fault it!
I would avoid the cheaper boxes that simply fool the fuel temp sensor into adding more fuel - they create more smoke and maybe cause idling problems. Personally I would also avoid anything that's a permanent change to the car i.e. chip change - re-sale values are badly affected by mods like that.
Quite agree with what pascal says - the majority of the boxes on eBay are the very cheap 'resistor mods' and should be avoided at all costs.
What they do is simply fool the ECU into adding more fuel by putting a resistor into the fuel temperature sensor circuit. The ECU thinks the fuel is hotter than it actually is and simply adds more. This just creates smoke as the actual engine maps are not changed.
Have a look on www.mbclub.co.uk and the Disesl Driver forum too, those guys will help with more info.
I reserve judgement on that Richard,
................... Thing is DMS Automotive's Website seems too have disappeared. I am not sugesting for one minute that you have any affiliation to DNS, but you gave a link to their site some time ago. If they have changed their name or somthing, please post new name and/or website.
The DMS site is here - http://www.dmsautomotive.com/ - you're right, no connection simply a satisfied customer who's happy to advocate their products and services.
Your right to be cautious, I was when I started looking for one of these over 2 years ago. I've learnt a lot from forums such as this and hope I can help others with that knowledge.
As I see it there are 3 choices when tuning a diesel (I don't include the cheap stuff off eBay for the reasons I've already mentioned):
- Tuning box type attachment
- Chip change
- Software change via the serial/diagnostics port
All are very similar in their results i.e. more power, better torque and in most cases better economy.
I would see the key benefit of a tuning box as being: You can return it to standard when selling (modified cars have very poor residuals).
The benefits of the other methods are that they can be customised to suit the individual car (assuming you've a good installer and a Rolling Road).
When I was originally looking Brabus quoted £900 for a box for my C220 CDi, plus fitting etc, Bromleys were very helpful with enquiries but simply too far away and DMS were very helpful and just down the road. DMS are simply a re-seller of these boxes - the actual manufacturers are mainly German and include Alpin(mine), Hopa, TD Performance and others. Many are re-branded by the re-sellers with stickers so their true origins are hidden.
Much of choosing one of these methods is a personal thing, who sounds good when you call, what you want from it, etc...
Hopefully this is useful, if not please let me know.
I'm looking for a s/h box for my Golf now, so if anyone knows......?
