C220 d Sports Cabriolet Roof issues

I bought my 2017 Cabriolet last April, and it is still under warranty from the Mercedes used cars garage I bought it from. My brother has the exact same car and told me to look at the tension cords as they fray, and this is a common fault. He had checked his and they were frayed and her took it back to his dealer who repaired them as his car was under warranty. I left my with the garage and they rang me today to say it's not covered by the warranty and priced me over £3000 to repair. I am more than annoyed.

I know there's a Motor Ombudsman and looked online to see that some have had repair costs refunded through them, even though their cars were not under warranty!

Anyone else experience this?

This is sadly a known fault on your model. Seems to be a case by case argument with MB re weather they will contribute to the repair. My best suggestion is to go to the dealer you had it from - hopefully an approved used MB establishment - and refer to the Bulletin (see below) with some arguing and a loud voice (for their customers benefit), if required!

It may also help if you have a service history with MB which would show some 'loyalty' as it were.

I’ve a C43 2017 same problem I’m taking mine too my independent guy as I’m not on any warranty but may enquire with Mercedes as I’ve up to now full service history wi them from new mine has only covered 22000 from new but on reading your pitch checked mine and same issue as yourself if this is as many say is a design failure then it surely must be addressed you would have thought a recall would have been issued but being hidden from view I expect the manufacturer has been very quite..good to join this platform I’m a newcomer some good tips and advice many thanks all

I'd think if you have a full history you've got some loyalty to MB which they may take into consideration, if you took it to a main dealer. Recalls normally relate to safety so likely the only way MB would recall would be voluntarily and unlikely they want to do that. 22,000 is very low mileage, too.

I've replaced one of the soft top headliner cords on my 2018 convertible. Cord number 7 (blue) had frayed. Fiddly job but doable. I've got the remainder of the kit plus fabric tape and instructions from MB if anybody needs it (minus one cord). I priced this job and the cost was eye watering...

Thanks for the advice and your reply Harry wI’ll bear it in mind I’ve a really good rapport with the independent so they will give me some advice as well I know them well now a very honest and straight which is not always the norm these days Mercedes dealerships haven’t been the best over the years that I’ve owned merc car’s sadly ..anybody had issues nice to hear about or advice always appreciated.

Thanks Chris for your input very welcome think sent a reply to previous contact I’m new on the block try getting used to this very useful platform but a Mercedes nut for many years passionate merc fan
The replacement cords are extremely fiddly I admire your patience and obviously has saved you a mint be interesting to see what the cost will be for a dealer to undertake I would tackle the task but I’m a carer for my wife so time is of the essence. .regards Mike

Thanks Mike, but I'm not a soft top owner now, last was a Porsche 968 but for 5 years now has been an SLK - tin roof, not canvas! However, I frequent both the MBClub (unoffocial, AKA t'other side on here!) my post linked to, and MBOA forums, there's been a couple of recent threads about this problem on t'other side so I just wanted to give you a link to one and a hint that a search on there might help. I'll still recommend that you register on there as well as here, over the years I've found that I'll get help on one but not the other, or next time it might be the other was round, hence I'll often post on both and see what comes back!
