C220 D Tyre / ride problem

Help please guys On my 1996 C220D I have 225 45 17 Z tyres on AMG style alloys.
The front two are worn Uniroyal Rain??? which do need replacing anytime now. On the rear are almost brand new Avon ZZ3.
Problem is: the car is VERY unstable going over poor road surface eg catseyes or a poor uneven tarmac surface. The feeling is of a major wander/veering or even a lurching - not good I can tell you . It passed its MOT in Sept and suspension etc is nice and solid on a good surface.
Could it be either the worn front tyres or the tyres are just too large/wide or wrong for the car perhaps - - or any other thoughts appreciated thank you as I need to replace the front tyres v soon.

Hi

The tyre are going to exagagerate any problem you may have. But I would check the steering damper & replace if its worn. It most probably is as they are very common. Check also the the front castor control arm bushes. If you look at the front lower suspenion arms. The bushes at the rear. They split. Very common. If they are really gone. This will cause the vehicle to be skittish when driving.
