I have bought a 1996 C220 diesel automatic with 113000 miles on the clock with FSH. And the automatic gear change is rough could this mean it is on the way out.

Thanks

First check the ATF level ,it may be that you don't have a dipstick, also check on your service history if the ATF and gearbox filter have ever been changed, if not have it done .Originally these boxes were deemed sealed for life but this has now been changed and the norm is to change ATF and filter every 40-60k miles. If you feel able to do it yourself here is a good guide.

Hi there, I bought a C220D last year with 140k on the clock. The gearbox was a bit jumpy at odd times, nothing other than intermittent clunky changes. I'd heard that it could be a vacuum problem, so I checked all the vacuum pipes were on tight. it improved a bit. I changed the engine oil, it improved a bit. In fact I know when to change the oil as the gearbox gets less smooth. Generally, it's a bit lumpy for the first three miles on the way to work in the morning then as smooth as silk, except when changing from 2nd to 1st on the overrun, ususally on the roundabout at the Forth Bridge.

The dipper is at the left side of the head against the bulkhead. It's got a factory sealed cap. I never even bothered to check it. It's also averaging 42 - 43 mpg.

Hope this helps.

Willie,
have you changed the gearbox oil and filters?. As C220GJS say, this should be done every 40-60k and you are asking for trouble if you ignore this one. You also shouldn't be able to tell when the engine oil needs changing as this would infer that if you can feel it, it's already stopped doing it's job. I'd make a note of the mileage and change earlier next time.

The dipstick is at the driver's side rear of the engine; if you have a dipstick , check the level after a minimum 10 mile run to ensure the gearbox is up to temp. Car on level with engine running and gearbox in park , withdraw dipstick, wipe with a clean lint free cloth and replace ,withdraw dipstick and check the level which should be between the upper 80C markings. If the level is low add the correct fluid through the dipstick hole using a small funnel but do not overfill.
As i said if you have no record of your gearbox fluid and filter having been changed, never mind checking the level and book it in to have the job done. Check with MB ,I think someone said recently they take about £95 for ATF and filter change which is good value considering the cost of parts. Hope it cures your problem.

Hi Thanks for the advice. Where are the filters for the gearbox? I was thinking of changing the ATF but it has a full history and a factory sealed dipper. I was assuming that it was in there for life. Do you know better?
