C220 Speedo

Hi all, my partner recently bought a 96 c220 with a non working speedo, the chap she bought it off said he was told its an abs unit at fault, does that sound right or does anyone have any ideas on the fault

If the ABS was at fault the warning lamp would be on, the car needs to be tested to see if the speed sensor signal is getting as far as the instrument cluster
