Hi guys, Merc virgin here so be gentle.

I'm looking at buying a c220 (2012) with 93k on the clock.

Was wondering if there is anything I need to look for in particular as never brought higher mileage cars before.

I've also read some in some places that timing chain needs doing around 100/150k mark. But other places say to leave alone.

Any feedback would be appreciated as don't want to be stuck with a money pit.

Cheers

Hello and welcome,

A manual gearbox isn’t something you generally want in a Mercedes. Unless it’s in the boot and you’re delivering it somewhere...

Mercedes drivers use the left foot for pressing the parking brake only.

That aside, if you like the car, then go for it.

Mercedes manuals are good, you can read them to learn about your car...:p

You don’t want them to change gear for you though... they’re terrible (compared to the automatics (and worth about half as much...))

Welcome, a 220 C class manual with 100K on the clock seems expensive to me.
Bear in mind when you come to sell no one really wants a manual MB, it will be hard to sell.
There are a few issues with the cam belt chain, sprocket, tensioner on this engine. A full service record will help to minimise any problems.
I would spent a little more & get an auto, you will recover your cost when you come to sell. MB make good autos.
How about this?

It has a full service history, but I have heard about drive Chain issues etc, obviously that puts a doubt in my mind.

Regarding it being a manual I was hoping to keep the car for a good few years so wasn't expecting much back on the resale value anyway.

Welcome - you've already got the views on the manual gearbox. Only my last two cars have been auto and I wouldn't go back to manual. Have even got an auto for Mrs L as well now. As for Halogen headlights, they aren't very good. I had them on my last car and always regretted it and we often get posts on here asking what can be done to upgrade them.

So, my view - go auto and find Xenon headlamps - you won't regret it!

Hello jkee85 and welcome!

I actually prefer auto in any car and enjoy listening to the particular auto box so I can spot the point where the tiniest +/- tweak on the accelerator can make it change up. Before I had a Merc I spent years in the London area where my 15 minute "normal" journey to my office took 55 minutes or more because of stop/start traffic. My first automatic - a cheap and not so cheerful Morris Marina Estate (but it was brand new company car!) showed me how I could relax and enjoy that diabolical trip because apart from steering and brakes it pretty well drove just as I wanted.

But a Merc box is something else... from poodling round town in traffic to pounding up and the motorway, I'll take an MB auto anytime - I really think they're the cats whiskers and I think most of our members are more or less the same. But I used to think the same as you so I'm not being intentionally critical... however, I do think if you had an auto Mercedes for a month you wouldn't want to go back to manual again - and contrary to most brands, MB mate the engine and auto box with sensible economy in mind!
