heya all im fairly new to all this but ive got a l reg w202 c220 and i seen this post about the flippin this cutting out mine does that too which is really annoying and imbarrasing has anyone found a cure for this problem yet as i am really loosing my temper with the car now i mean is the ecu that controls the ignition/injection in the top n/s corner of the engine bays cause i have 2 ecu,s there one has got a large long plug and the others have 2 shorter ones cause it seems like sometimes when the plugs on the 2 smaller ecu's are moved/wriggled it will start but sometimes not, i dont believe it is the fuel pump as i can hear it run on cranking the engine so in thinging that it has ti be injection or ignition i really hope some one could shed some light upon the subject as it really is annoying pls hlp out some one thanks si

I can understand how you feel. After much work recorded on this site to find the fault on my C200 W202 I STILL havnt found the source of my failure to start. I first belived it was the imobiliser so after much dashboard ripping fully removed the entire alarm system. No help as I am afraid this post is to you but at least you are not alone. My ECU is my next item to try. I live in hope. I love my Merc.

i have a 94 C 220,
i have had numerous repairs on it...
first the throttle body control or the actuator was changed as when i drive slowly the engine shut down itself. That solved it
just recently when my car was cold it the RPM would not be stalbe & the whole car would vibrate untill the temperate was 80....to solve this 2 computers were changed, 1 cold start sensor 2 switches & the airflow sensor was changed. that solved it.
i do not recommend using keyless entry as i have had numerous problems with it. When i used & when i unlocked the door thru keyless, the car would not start... i took it to the garage & this guy opened the doors with normal keys & WALAAH ! the car started after that....
I WANT TO MAKE A CONFESSION HERE.... C CLASS IS FULL OF FAULTS I PRAY FOR ALL THOSE WHO HAVE THEM

AMEN to that one.I have a 220CDI and to be honest it is a nice car badly put together. I understand that up to 2003 they where assembled in South Africa.I think mine ,Nov 2000, must have been built by trainees. The moral here is don't buy one built between 2000 and 2003.In fact if I could afford it I would go for a late 2004 model.Very disappointed in mine.

I've a C220 and it works everytime, (from 1995). The only time i had problems with it starting was when a battery cell failed and replacing the battery cured that issue. The only other worrying issue I had was related to the OVP causing the engine to REV by itself, this was possibly down to wet/loose solder joints on the OVP itself. Since then (I cleaned it thouroughly) I havn't seen the issue.

I've never had such a reliable car in my life (so far).

Every car will have problems, some major, some minor, but I think it's unfair to label an entire series as bad because of some issues that you may experience. You could just be unlucky or your car may have had a careless previous owner, one way or another though, I hope you get the problems diagnosed correctly so that others here will learn how to fix the problem should they encounter it.

and for those that are interested, it'll be part of a feature in a UK based Mercedes Benz Enthusiasts magazine coming out in April.

I love mercedes !

cheers
