I am looking at buying a 2004 C220 cdi auto evo panorama coupe that has done 36k miles, the car was registered in May 04 and looks in really nice condition but I keep reading horror stories about poor build quality, rust, auto box problems caused by coolant leaking into the box and glow plugs that fail, break and then cost an arm and a leg to sort out , surely the cars cannot be that bad--Can they??
The car should be available for around £9k, does this sound god value or would I be better paying out more for a newer model ?, the seller claims he is getting around 45-50MPG does this sound feasable?

Thanks to anyone who has the patience to answer all these questions ,I hope these cars are not as bad as they are reported to be

Valeo radiator was only an issue up to 2003 I think, so you should be OK on that one. Search the forum for more info & dates etc.

Poor build & rust should be better from 2004 models onwards.

45 - 50 mpg should be easily obtainable on a run. Expect around 30mpg or less about town.

I agree with Russ on the mpg point - 45 - 50 is obtainable if you go a bit easy - 40 - 45 more realistic if your right foot is a bit heavier
in town/mixed driving I'd regard 30 as a minimum and maybe 35 -38 as achieveable - this is based on a saloon but can't believe they'd be that different

The particular car I am interested in was 1st registered May 2004 the engine number is 61196230672024 can anyone tell me if this would fall outside the cars with the Valeo radiator problem and all the other build quality issues? I tend to do a fair bit of mtorway driving usually at 70-75 when M1 traffic permits so hopefully I might see 45-50 MPG
