Hello All,

Recently had an overhaul on my Cylinder head, When i received the car back I had a "Knock" coming from the motor. Took the car to Mercedes and they told me its a Piston Slap and that my Camshaft Adjuster had to be replaced (I have just replaced the Adjuster...... )

I thought a piston slap was a clearance issue on the Bore

Could this be true ?

Thanks

You are correct in what you say about piston slap, and it is where the skirt of the piston touches the side of the bore, the odd thing is that if it was this, then it would have been there before you had the head done

Thanks Malcolm,

What you recommend ?, Should I tell them they are smoking there socks... :D

Or just accept that they cant find the problem either.....

I have been through everything, Camshaft Adjuster, Injectors

It must have something to do with the Head as the noise started with the head replacement, unless the overheat cause bottom end failure

Thanks

Its worth a simple compression test to see if it picks anything up, piston slap is almost an unheard of word these days, and I cant recall a 111 ever on here with it

I agree with Malcolm--piston slap is unheard of nowadays + the fact the M111 is supposed to be bulletproof !-- I am very curious to know what the outcome is ?

I would love to know the outcome myself, Problem is that no one can pin point the issue. I love my car but i have had issues since december (frustrating ). With the Windows up and radio off your can hear the knock but from the engine bay I can hear nothing.... ( spent a good couple of hours looking for it )

BTW; Update on the other noise - They say the camshaft adjuster is noisy and needs to be replaced .... Problem is I have already replaced it (Second Hand) as well as the lifters (New) - And Yet the Noises Continue .....:confused:

A light knocking sound which appeared to be engine related on my previous 1999 Clk with the 111 engine eventually turned out to be a broken exhaust bracket. I was totally convinced it was coming from the engine bay until I happened to bend down and realised the sound got louder and was coming from UNDER the engine bay.

Much relief 'cos a spot of welding was a great deal cheaper than any engine repair would have been :D

I had a similar problem on my bmw e65 turned out to be the
Alternator bearing, but if you listened to it, it sounded
Like the engine was shot, and even took bmw 2 hours
Trying to find the cause, new alternator and it was so quiet
Could be something similar

Trying the car with the fan belt off would eliminate all of the front running gear, only try it for a short run though
