My C230K has 'missed' a couple of times in the last few weeks - it is overdue for 60k service (by about 3k miles) yesterday it missed again under medium harsh acceleration and started to run on 2/3 cyliners. I stopped, popped the bonnet but could not see anything obvious - re-started and ran perfectly for anothewr 60 miles. It played up again on the way back.

I want to think it is a dirty sparkplug or a problem with the HT leads - I would be great if could actually see these part of the engine - where do I look...?

The HT leads/plugs/dizzy would be my first port of call also.

I do not think your M111.975(?) engine has an OVP relay.

I am also thinking fuel pump relay (cheapish), or MAF meter (more expensive)

All moderns MBs have these engine covers, which need to be removed.

The car has just been for a 60k service. £477 is the list incl parts, bill is at a cool £988 allowing for brake pds, belts and a few other odds and sods.

The deeply boring bit is that the mis-fire is due to a fault within the ECU - another eight hundred quid fitted.

Is there another way?

Update.

Stealership claim that on road test the car was again missing. I have just given it a 20 min test - no problems.

Independent 'Mainly Mercs' said it sounded rather unusual. He will test the car on Monday!

FYI - if you do need an ECU, they can often be repaired.
e.g. http://www.carelect.demon.co.uk/merc.html

Or you could pay about £700 for a new one like I did! .

That's somewhat the worst case anyway. Check the plugs, they may never have been changed. If not, it will be the MAS - they fail with fail!

About £300 new, but that's how your car will feel with a new one if yours has been working incorrectly over a preiod of time.

10 minute job to change yourself, but hooking up to MB's computer first should confirm the fault codes are corrrect.
