C240 auto gearbox fault ('98)

Does anybody know why my auto box is having difficult with changing. It has trouble with kickdown. Sometimes changing down sometimes not. It also has trouble changing down gears when coming to a halt. Dropping the last gear when stationary with a jolt. Somebody has suggested to me to replace the electro - hydralic control unit. Others have suggested to just chnage the gearbox oil and filters. Any ideas on the best way forward

First off - change the oil and filter - you can do it yourself if you can change the oil on your car.

buy new filter from merc.

buy oil FROM MERC NOT any old auto fluid

drain/remove sump from gearbox. remove filter, etc etc.

THEN do the expensive stuff.

Also - try re-setting the gearbox (its been posted to switch on ign, hit full throttle (engine off) for 5 seconds, switch off, wait 3 mins, turn on, start, drive). or try disconnecting battery for 10 mins.
