Whilst driving recently on the M1, I experienced a loss of drive with a corresponding rise in engine speed. Stopped and examined the car and discovered that a transmission oil cooler feed pipe had leaked. Towed home by RAC, changed the pipe and replaced the oil. When I used the car again ok for first few miles then lost drive again. If I switched off and waited for 1 or 2 minutes I could drive normally for about 1-2 miles before I again lost drive. Any ideas please?

Is the oil level correct? It is very possible to do damage to the gearbox if driven without oil untill it loses drive altogether.

The first indication I got was when I lost drive whilst driving, as said before that was due to a broken oil feed pipe. The car was then not driven until a new pipe was fitted and the oil replenished to the correct level. I drove it some 5-6 miles until it was hot before I started to have problems again. But this time the oil level was still on full. I did experience a ringing note as the engine revs increased. I then shut down, let it cool for a few moments and then drove it steadily until it again gave traction problems about 1-2 miles further on. Again letting it cool for a while helped and traction was restored. I'm trying to identify the problem without having to resort to MB who's stock answer is always to replace! Hope that describes the symptoms better.

I think you need to remove the sump & look for any metal filings or debris.

I agree with type49. Sounds like the filter is almost blocked. Sump off, clean up and new filter and fluid may well keep you going. Had this years ago with a Borg Warner box in a BMW coming back from Le Mans. Worked a treat. Had the box reconditioned about a year later.

Whilst I agree with both of you on this, I think its better to have the fault code read out done. There are so many faults could cause this problem

Thanks to everyone so far, it looks though that I need to book it in or at least have a conversation with MB before using the car any further.
