Hi, the problems that you have found with the suspension are nothing unusual. All of these items wear and unfortunately in these days of increasing use of speed bumps etc. it just makes all the suspension components wear faster.

It is normally recommended to change both front springs at once. This ensures the spring rate is matched, but also if one has failed the chances are that the other one will too before long. The bottom ball joints also wear and it is not at all unusual for these to need replacing at the mileage you have. Given all the above it would be very suprising if the drop links did not need replacing! They are not expensive components and the cost will be mostly labour. If you are intending to keep the car a year or two I would recommend removing the anti-roll bar completely and also replacing the mounting bushes. These are another cheap component and it is actually much easier to fit the drop links onto the roll bar with it off the car.

If that wasn't enough, don't be suprised if they recommend to replace the track rod ends as well! These will wear at the same sort of rate as all of the other components and probably need doing unless they have already been replaced within the last 10k miles or so.

All of the above work is within the capability of a keen car DIYer, but of course not everyone likes to get their hand dirty! The price you have been quoted may be a bit on the high side to do just one side, but not if it includes doing both sides as it should be - not sure what labour rate you are being charged? They should tell you the breakdown of parts cost and labour charge. If you can find this out people here on the forum will be able to advise you if it is a fair price (you also need to say where in the country you are located).

Good luck,

Dave

Dave, I am a new member living in Sea, WA area.

Trying to help friend who ownes a 2003 C240 with 57,000 miles. Car started its life in salted roads Eastern USA.

Apparently he currently has at least one rear suspension spring that is broken, as seen by independant shop.

I do not have any Mercedes experience, however I do have a mechanical background and many tools.

How may I learn/read how to accomplish the work you wrote about ABOVE..........

Not sure if the C240 has struts on all four wheels or ??? If I can remove struts from car, will it be neccessary to have someone with correct tool R&R springs or ???

Also where online is most cost effective place to buy ALL the misc parts???

Thanks so much............not sure when I should check back here for reply......
