Hello, New purchase (as per other posts) and have just filled up for the first time following mainly motorway (75 tops), a couple of cobweb clearers and a few short trips.

The C240 has return 32 mpg and I am a happy bunny. One question, does using the Winter (W) mode on the transmission give an noticeable improvement, I have had the EC mode engaged to keep the compressor off but, with earlier transmission shifts and starting in 2nd, I was wondering if any members have seen any great increases in MPG by sticking to the W mode.

For info: The car has used a couple of litres of oil in the last 5000 miles but was mainly used for horrid short trips by the previous owner so I am not too concerned about that just yet and MB state that a litre of oil per 1000km's is ok. My dads C240 seems to go without top up between services but other members have posts relating to oil consumption.

It should be a bit more economical okay. I presume you have a 5sp auto. It is adaptive, so your use of your right foot will make a lot more difference. But if your cruising down the motorway with C.control set at 75, I don't think it will make any difference.

MPG is always difficult to assess. I have seen between 28 and 34 on what I can only describe as identical daily journeys - I guess a slight increase in wind or traffic and the difference can be quite noticable. My E240 averages 30-32 provided most of the journey is motorway and I don't keep it over 85 for too long. I have seen 37 but that was steady 75 on cruise without aircon for 180 miles when I had about 25k on the clock. - never get close normally.

In terms of oil, all cars are different but on mine - same engine 55k miles, in 10,000 miles, done since the last service at the end of November, I have put in 2 1/2 litres of Mobil 1 to keep it topped up to max. I do this to keep the ASSYST happy and it seem to work with the next service not due for another 5,000 miles yet, so it must be good for the engine too.

On the gearing, I agree with Pascal, on a run it will make no difference. Around town, yes, with W, it does start in 2nd and I find it great in traffic jams as it picks up more smoothly on stop-start and creeps (feet off) much faster being in 2nd - also doesn't need to keep changing up and down. But, with what you save in starting in 2nd, you lose in the torque converter slip so I doubt it makes any eco difference. Also, that slip is translated into heat and allegedly the heat is not good for the system over a prolonged period of time.

Fuel Consumption

Hello 2nd tank full and 1 1/2 litre oil top up (synth) and the car has done 35mpg with motorway trips (not too gentle) and a couple of local shops. The assyst now advises that the service is due not in 4900 miles as when I collected it but 6800 miles (and rising). As I thought, the car did a multitude of minor trips before. I am sure "sadie" (naming ceremony completed) is breathing a sigh of relief.

Like the MB system of a minimum of 10k though as we had a 320 bm years ago and the lights could be all out in 3500 miles with my wife only needing it for short trips. Inspection 2's were dreaded.

Very pleased with the car (sorry, Sadie  ) and this forum is great, it has put my mind at rest. Thanks for the excellent replies.
