Hi, this is my first thread within this forum.
I have owned a 1998 C240 sport for a year now, and apart from the rust i have been happy with it. Until now the car has always run at 80° on the temperature gauge, but recently the car has began to run at 95-100° on the run or being stationary. I took the car to the Mercedes 'Stealers' who after spending £140 on diagnostics, informed me they could not find anything wrong with the car as the temperature did not get that high in their workshop. On Friday when the car was running at 100° i was passing the dealership so i took the car in and showed it to their technician, who scratched his head and said that it shouldn't be doing this but he didn't know why it was happening!!!! I personally believe it must be either the thermostat, the cooling fan or the cooling fan 'electronic speed unit'. Any advice would be gratefully recieved as i wish to drive the car without worrying about permanantly damaging it.

Many thanks in advance James

Hi James and welcome to the forum, your car has a visco fan as in the link above, though it spins all of the time it does not lock up and spin on full power untill the engine is at 80c, when they are worn they do not speed up.

We test them with a carrot, let the engine go up to 85c and see if the fan will slice a carrot, if it stops you need a new coupling.

If you have air con then the electric fan comes on at 100c, but do the carrot test first.

Thanks Malcolm, but I don't think my car has a viscous fan, i'm pretty sure the fan is just a standard electric unit.

Cheers James

I am confused now, is the viscous fan engine driven or electrically driven and mounted on the rear of the radiator. My car has only got an electical fan on the rear of the radiator and not an engine driven fan, which I thought was the viscous type. Many thanks.

These cars often have 2 fans with no air con there is just the viscous, on the engine, and when air con is fitted an additional fan is on the rad. The viscous cuts in at 80c and the electric 100c

Yours is the 112 engine and I have given out this info hundreds of times, I have just double checked you car number.

Thanks Malcolm, it's just I can't see any other fan other than the the electric fan. I take it the viscous fan should be on the front of the engine block adjacent to the electric one? At the front of my engine there is only a large selection of pulleys with one big drive belt. I would post a photo but I don't know how too! I am definately not doubting your knowledge, I am just very confused, once again many thanks for the information.

I will attempt to send a picture of my engine bay. I don't think its fallen off. Maybe someone else needed one and nicked mine!

The whole point here is that if you have not got one, then the electric fan will not cut in under 100c

Malcolm, the car does get to 100°C and then the electric fan does cut in, but not very fast (maybe 120rpm). My concern is why it is getting to 100°C in the first place, when it only used to run at around 80°C until a few days ago. I am now concerned as to why my car is not fitted with a viscous fan as well as an electric fan. Looking at the picture you sent me the four bolts are in the crankshaft pulley, but there isn't a fan attached to them! Thanks for all your help. James
