Hi
I have a 1998 MB c240T. The drive belt broke the other day, and I put on a new one today after looking up the routing diagram from here: http://www.detali.ru/cat/oem_mb2.as...GM=716.621&CT=M&cat=19X&SID=13&SGR=135&SGN=05

At first it seemed to be OK, but after engine running about 1 min. it started to come smoke from the radiator front. I stopped the engine and found that the radiator front was very warm. After a while I started the engine once more, only to find that I now had a loud noise coming, so I shut down again.

Any ideas any?

You need to remove the belt and check that none of the pulleys are seized. Its possible that you have a noisy tensioner pulley or even a broken water pump..why did the other belt break..

If the car was running OK before you changed it, you have put it back wrong, the smoke sounds as though the belt is rubbing on something, and in no way is this anything to do with the rad overheating

Tension pulley wheel bearing was broken

Hi
I found that the bearing for the tension pulley wheel was broken. Se pics. But I am not sure if I can buy just the wheel or the bearing. My dealer only has the hole unit in the catalog, and this cost a lot of money.

I still don't understand why the radiator turn hot immediate?? It was my wife driving the car when the belt broke, and she continued driving till she got home, appr. 10 km. Maybe the engine top gasket is broken too.

I will change the bearing/wheel/tension pulley unit and try to start again to see one more time.

You could go to any ball bearing shop and just buy the bearing,, anyone could press it out and fit the new one

There is no way that the rad can get hot in a few mins, and the hot water is returned to the top of the rad, and never the bottom

Well, I guess that if the engine top gasket is broken there is a possibility that exhaust can leak into the cooling system, and open the thermostat by pressure to heathen the radiator. And that this might be the only way the radiator can get hot so fast.

Anyway, I hope this is not the case, as I then have to use a professional garage for repair.

That is possible but I hope not. you could run the engine for a few mins with the belt off to check this as no water is circulating until the thermostat open.

It is unlikely to be exhaust gasses as most of the weak spots are on the other side of the head,,but who knows

Luckily it was just the bearing.
Now the engine is running as before.

I was able to get a new bearing from an electrical shop not far from where i am living. But I had to split the tension wheel to change the bearing, by drilling out the clinchers and replace them with new bolts and nuts. I hope this will do the job and not loosen by the vibration.

If anybody is interested, the data for the bearing I used is: SKF 206D 6203-2RSH/C3

Thanks for your engagement.
