hello im new to this so bear with me please , ive bought a 98 c240 as a project , after spending the last 30 odd years playing with fords , i bought it with a gearbox problem and that is that it does nothing in any gear except park , there is no change in the idle when shifting through the gears , i have dipped the gearbox and there is about 30mm of nice clean fluid in the box , the story goes that it was part exchanged at a main dealer and left for a month or two and when they went to move it it woudnt do anything , before i investigate further has any one got any ideas on what to check next , the mileage is 108,000 and has a full mb service history , i would be gratefull for any ideas or advice . many thanks mick

Hello and welcome to the forum, if the car has not moved for some time, all of I can think of is a valve stuck in the valve block.
First thing that I would do is to get the engine up to running temp, and leave it idling in a hope to warm it up, there is no reason for a pump to stop working ,just through standing

thanks for that i will do that this morning and let you know what happens , i take it that if the egs or other electrics were playing up something would happen when you move the selector ?

If the car has been jump started, this could have blown something, but this car is quite bullet proof in this respect, you do have the selector module and an ECU, but cant recall one totally dead, and nothing listed for no drive at all

hello again ; i tried getting car up to working temp and it lurched slightly going into reverse no other gears just reverse and only on idle not with any revs on , this is a great improvement as it wasnt doing anything before so when it stops raining in cambs im going to check atf level again to eliminate high / low level problems and then try it again and see what happens , thanks for the fast response earlier
