My 1997 c240 (V6 ) is now loosing quite a bit of water and It looks like its coming from the Water Pump So I am collecting anew one this afternoon I am hoping it is similar to BMW & Volvo ( the last ones i did ) and should be relatively straightforward other than Belt Removal / replacement.
has anyone any advice / tips on removal / fitting???? :-? particularly as the manual doesn't cover this engine.

you shoul d ensure to replace coolant with the Mercedes coolant. Once the repair has been effected it will be necessary to bleed the system. Ensure to drain all water from heater and pipes by turning the heater controls to on when draining coolant ? water.

Help television are you out there?

As usual with these jobs straightforward initially (first 15mins )engine cover off, Fan Shroud out, coolant Drained, and yes it looks like the pump is knackered, its wobbling all over the place, but now I am having trouble undoing the Fan Bolt (the 36mm one ). I have a home made bar / strip tool that acts as an anti rotation tool but when i then hold the pulley and turn it (clockwise to undo the fan nut ) my tool bends open and the fan pulley rotates. In the Haynes it says make ur own tool up and attach to the pulley bolts but the pulley bolts are not readily undoable as they have no flat faces they have a female key to undo and obviously the viscous fan assembly is about 25mm in front of the female key .

It looks like i need a 50mm or 2 inch Thin spanner to use as an anti rotation gripper on the 4 pulley bolts, while i use my my 36mm fan spanner, or need something to get the pully bolts undone so i can attach something there another home made adaptor.

a water pump should be easier to replace than this :-(

Hi,

I did one of these a couple of months back.

As you remove each of the bolts on the pump(there are a lot), put them into the corresponding holes in the new pump. There are many different sizes of bolt and trial and error gets a but dull after a while.

You may also want to check the idler pulley that is held on by a bolt through the pump to see if this needs replacing.

Regards

Try hitting your 36mm spanner with a hammer to shock the nut free. Usually works for me...

i dont know about the mercedes but a lot of engines with sepetine belts , the fan is left hand thread . it depends on the rotation of the fan normally .
if the fan rotates anti clockwise it might be left hand thread , so instead of losening it your actually tightening it .

This is typical Merc attempting to make it as hard as possible for any of us "stooge " customers to carry out any repairs whatsoever without engaging the services of A Merc Stealer. Keep persevering you will get there.

A large screwdriver on the flat of the bolt and a sharp thwack with a hammer worked for me.

How to Hold the Fan Pulley??

Tried a scredriver and Hammer - no avail , also tried waterpump pliers again no avail. all i can think of now is to make a tool up but it'll take half a day to make one up. if only i could hire or borrow ( main dealer wont)

I also noticed that when I come to remove the belt the tensioner appears to be held in place by a star socket with ..........wait for it......... a pin in the middle! so a standard star socket will not fit in? so there appear to be two problems requiring special tools which i haven't got

Its cheap to buy a security Torx bit, they do not cost much.

I have broken the pins off before now just by bending them off, but it depends on what size it is

I have a set of star bits with a hole in the middle, where abouts are you located?

Home is Sutton Coldfield Midlands, Work is tamworth Staffs.
Fabricated a home made tool to get fan off now done, new water pump is on
:D just got to get a new poly belt to put on, then the tensioner ???? and tighten everything else and fill / leak test.
One of my problems was that i was trying to undo the Fan Clockwise like the Haynes manual says (albeit not this engine ) when I got the new Pump I double checked the thread and found it was an anti clockwise undo so with the new tool ( 1 1/2 hrs to make ) it came off a dream.
