Hello All, new to the forum. Joined specifically for some help on chain replacement on my c250 cgi. Now I’ve found a fairly cheap replacement kit: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/282725776657
And I know I need a cap for the tensioner also. As I changed the tensioner this first hoping it was the problem but it wasn’t, my issue is on start up the chain rattles really bad and that’s it it’s fine after. But i leave the car for a while it rattles on start up again. Which led me to believe oil wasn’t getting to the tensioner. I changed it along with and oil and filter with mb part and didn’t sort out the issue. I’ve driven for 2-3 hours with this issue and it’s been fine. So I’ve seen a thread here before with another member with the same or similar issue. And I just wanted to know what cam locking tools or specialist tools I’d need. ( apprentice in the motor trade)

thank you and all help will be appreciated

Your problem could be just one of the gears failing internally. There is a cam locking tool, not sure it’s worth buying just for one job.
Be careful what kit you buy, the one shown has too many parts to what’s needed, oil pump chain? Never changed one. Plus some of the parts available from some suppliers are made of chocolate.

@deanfletcher thank you for the welcome

@star thanks for the reply, I have noticed that der was way too many parts also but I just thought I’d fit what I fit and leave the rest, also i know what you mean by chocolate Lool but this one has 2 reviews and a year guarantee. Also the cam tool I believe I have found the right one reasonably priced also: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/253946291581

Update: so today afternoon I decided to remove the rockercover and have a look at the gears. 8FE2EE2C-887E-4F9F-BA9C-87FFFBAAE894.jpeg
After doing so I noticed that no teeth were missing or chipped or scored too much. So I thought I’d turn the crank to tdc to check the timing. EE805BE9-7D30-4A58-876C-5BDC154FF0CA.jpeg As you can see it is out, which I now believe the chain is stretched and it’s not the cam adjusters. now while turning the crank I heard a reasonable mechanical sort of click, is this normal?

All help is much appreciated

The internals of the exhaust cam have definitely failed, the cam is timed up but the gear is out. So chain, sprockets, tensioner and both gears. I would only fit a mb chain, gears can be sourced non mb but be careful. A well known supplier of chains etc had a bad batch of chains which failed prematurely.

Hello and welcome,

I’ve moved this thread to the engine section, for fairly obvious reasons...
