Hello, everyone,

I bought the used Mercedez c250 White just last September 2023 (first registerd in 2010)and only drove 95000 miles, but 2 days ago it suddenly broke down on the road. I delivered to a local Mecerdez care centre diagnosis: "Transmission slipping-oil in very poor condition/filter blocked and tried a transmission service and flush." I paid 300 pounds plus a 144 pounds health check. After collection just drove 15 miles back home. The next day when drove to a supermarket, it broke down again on the road. Mercedez said that maybe the transmission is damaged, and needs a new one. I do not understand this, because the car used to drive super, and speaking of the less mileage only 95000, how could the transmission have been damaged? Also just had a MOT check 2 months ago, and the previous owner had a service last year.

Hello and welcome,

95,000 miles on a 2023 car is really, really, high mileage… if it’s really covered 95k miles it should have had a gearbox service at 77k miles.

2023 is still under 3 year Mercedes warranty so let them get on with it.

Think its a 2010 car Russ. No warranty but yes, should have had an ATF service long ago.
I'd be finding a local Mercedes specialist and having the diagnostic codes read.
It could be one of a number of issues not covered by a transmission service which is just an ATF and filter change.

Thank you very much for reply, yes I bought it in 2023 as a used car, it was registered in 2010.

Thank you very much for reply. But Mercedes centre said that if the transmission service does not fix the slipping issue, there will be a transmission damage, may need a replacement. I just don't know why the transmission can be damaged at this mileage 95000 with a last year full service.

Can you check your service records/invoices to see if your car has had the automatic gearbox serviced? A "full service" does not necessarily mean a gearbox service which is generally classed as additional work. There should be references on bills to "ATF" (Automatic Transmission Fluid) in litres and also an ATF filter.

It’s a pity that MB don’t push the point that transmissions, like engines, NEED SERVICING, this type of situation is happening time and time again where unsuspecting buyers are purchasing a car they think has a full service history, no doubt the engine in this particular car will go on to 200k miles as it’s been serviced regularly.

My E53 will get a transmission service at 50k miles it’s currently on 44k - recommended 77k

Gearbox service is also on a timed basis as well as mileage . 5 years or 77,500 . Whichever comes first . :)

Good morning and welcome..

unfortunately anything can break if not looked after properly. As already suggested, I would find a good Mercedes independent garage and see what they say. It is time to step away from the main dealerships as your car is a bit older.

Sadly the damage may have already be done especially if it has not received a specific gearbox service as opposed to the standard A & B services, suggest establishing some gearbox change out costs but given the age of the car it would in my opinion not be financially viable.

That’s what I thought but not with the W/S213 the time period of 5 years has been dropped and the 77k mileage limit remains

I think the 5 year period has been dropped due to the fact that MB do a lot of service care work nowadays - that’s what the cynic in me says lol

The gearbox oil on our Dec 2016 SLC250D with the 9 speed box was not done at 5 years by MB. I challenged it & the reply was it did not come up on the service schedule.
That said it only had 22K miles on the clock.

I still think its worth a second opinion from a Mercedes specialist.
A slipping transmission could be the torque convertor within the gearbox.
The diagnostic fee isn't huge and will at least either confirm or refute the Mercedes Centre (who I assume are main dealers) opinion.

If the car is in good order and the transmission is toast, it maybe financially viable to have a used/reconditioned transmission fitted by a specialist.
Stay away from the main dealer.
