Hello list,
While driving on the open road yesterday my C250 Estate would not change up to 4th gear. I drove 20 miles home keeping an eye on the rev counter. Once home I tried shifting gear manually. Now the car will not move up from 1st gear (reverse is ok ).

There are signs of an oil leak under the near side front of the car. Is that where the ATF cooler is located.

I want to check the ATF level. Dip stick cap "says" only to be removed by MB. HOW DO I CHECK the level.

Regards Kyffin, St Andrews, Fife.

Welcome Kyffin to check your transmission oil yourself it's a case of buy or make a dipstick yourself or it's off to a dealers or Mercedes indipendant to get it checked that said it sounds like your trans is low on oil as you've spotted a leak and the box is not functioning properly. I would be wary of driving the car any distance with the trans low on oil

P.S. If you do a search on here there is a photo of the tip of a dipstick with the relevant measurements the length of the total stick is not important as you simply insert it as far as it will go some guys have made one from flexible (metal) curtain rod

Thanks for the offer to check known leaks. As I said in my first posting, the leak appears to be at the near side front, not near the gearbox. I also have a 1990 300E 24V some time ago that car had a leaking ATF cooler, which is mounted behind the front bumper.

What are the chances of having the same problem on both cars ?
