Hi,

I have the above and recently the inlet manifold pipe (?) which runs over the head has been blown off. The clip pops off above the turbo and the pipe comes away. Car obviously loses power and is noisy. I have put the clip back on securely but as soon as I give it some power it pops off again. The garage are a bit stumped as the pipe is sucking into the engine. They think the turbo is over-boosting and needs replacing. I have been quoted 1k for the parts alone (including VAT). Seems a bit much to me.

Any opinions? Cheers!

I've found most garages to be pretty clueless about turbo systems in the past. Try turbo technics for advice

If it is the turbo, they may well be the cheapest option, but it could still be something simple like the clip or hose is just stretched or worn out. Turbo systems are fitted with all sorts of safety devices in the case of the turbo overboosting, popping a hose is not one of them.

Turbo pipe

I had the same problem on my old c250.
The pipe gets oily with age.
I replaced the rubber pipe £20 ish and it was fine then.

The turbo wont give out any more air pressure as it ages, Try replacing the air hose and its clips. If the fault persists have the turbocharger wastgate checked out it may be failing to open at higher engine speeds and loads.

Thanks guys. I spoke to the Garage again and he says the wastegate is internal and can't be adjusted - thats why the turbo has to be replaced. He also says the intercooler has to be replaced and that its not worth doing the work. He is now investigating what I would get for the car for parts.

Am i being ripped off? So far he is charging me £320 just to tell me the car is a gonner!

If the internal waste gate is stuck and irrepairable it may be possible to put an external unit on, the sporty and noise brigade mags are full of them, ask a tuning/turbo man if it can be done to your car at at moderate cost.
