Hello everyone, i have a little problem with my sunroof, what happens is the sunroof will transit backwards but will not transit forwards!! I took it into a car electrician and he told me that you have to program the thing, so he had it for a few hours and it worked perfectly, now it's failed again i'd like to have a go at re-programming it myself to save a few bob, any idea's on how to do this or was the electrician talking a load of rubbish!

Any feedback would be gratefully accepted.

So you have the roof open and it won't shut ?

If the motor runs but the roof doesn't move, it can be rusty, un-lubricated rails, a badly adjusted clutch, cable problems or a stripped drive. If the roof sqeaked when it did work then lube is probably the problem.

Quite common to see thick chassis grease used on the rails which then attracts cr@p and gums up. Sticky rails make the clutch slip to protect the gear/motor.

Start with thoroughly cleaning and lubricating the rails and work the roof over and back using the emergency crank to loosen things up.

The "real" Merc grease is £15 and comes in a tin big enough to do 30 sunroofs every day for 2 years - blag a 35mm film box worth from your dealer! It has the consistency of vaseline but is waterproof.

Some people use WD40 or a PTFE lubricant spray - not as good but will get you moving.
