Hi guys, i have finally decided to write to you about my problems, after i have tried some diy my self without any success. I got the check engine light on and car went in to limp mode,it first happened after i have visited kwik fit for a wheel alignment (i suspected the mechanic moved the wheels while the car was lifted while in gear...i discussed this with some friends and everybody told it has nothing to do). What i know for sure...while waiting at the lights, after 10 min leaving the kwik fit shop...check engine came one...and i could barely move from a stand still....once moving all ok ...like it would start in 3rd gear(i think this was electronic limp). Went home plugged in my 'expensive' obd code reader (20£) and , surprise gave me a code p0705 and was able to delete it while engine was off(couldn't while on), after that took it to a friend with a professional tester and while my obd gave p0705 his machine gave p240c . Looked it up and i saw it was related to the TCM. Went to a mechanic and decided to check the multiplug...found it full off oil, bought a new one from dealer(24£) . When we changed it , the mechanic advised me to take the oil out so i wouldn't have to add any , as we didn't have a dipstick...the oil appeared very dark and we managed to take out 3.5 L. After asking around i was told we should have gotten 4.5L...so bought a 1L bottle and added it . After 2 days i got the error again, and after reading contradictory information on internet, i have decided to buy a dipstick so bought it from ebay ...not original , but not having any other choice decided to trust it so checked the oil level and i had to take out about 0.5L untill i got on the mark. After that the 2nd day i still got it in limp mode(stuck in 2nd). I just want to specify when the engine gets hot around 70-80 celsius when i change the position of the lever from P to D or any other change from R to D i can feel it is moving the car slightly not violent but it just doesn't feel right(nothing like the shock u get when u change in limp mode), otherwise while driving no matter what the temp of the engine changing between gears is very smooth, only rough when changing position of lever when hot.
We changed the multiplug ,cleaned it with brake cleaner and also i checked the module in the footwell and i could feel the wires oily and after opening the case of the module i could see that it was clean and no trace of oil so I cleaned the wires and still nothing will help. The fault comes usually when the engine is hot. All this happened over a month and after the first few times i got the error i started having only the other limp mode where it is stuck in 2nd gear. Also the car has an other problem i don't know if relevant but the fuel lines 'o' rings need changing. If i don t start the car for 24 hours i can see air bubbles on the fuel lines when i crank, and it needs about 10 cranks till it brings the diesel from the tank (looong loong way).If i have a full tank i can leave the car for 3 days and it will start first time. This is my 3rd mercedes , but honestly i don t know if i want to buy another one, hopefully i haven't done anything stupid to my car,i know that adding the oil and trusting the cheap dipstick were not the most intelligent choices but ... . I would be grateful to anyone who can point me in to the right direction. Thank you all for reading.

If you have the dip stick for the gearbox fluid have you checked it on the dip stick with the engine at 80c. Maybe the speed plate has failed. It needs STAR to really know what is going on.

Nobody? Nothing?Any idea would be appreciated. Also i was wondering would the quality of the oil be able to send the P0705(Transmission Range Sensor Circuit A malfunction (PRNDL Input)) and P240c( The CAN signal for the selector lever position from component N15/5), or i should only focus on electric componenets? Thank u .

Ill point you in the right direction...

Take it to an Indie who knows what hes doing and get it on STAR and to check the level of the gearbox correctly.

All guesswork so far and no actual diagnosis taken place. A lesson to the DIYers amongst us right here that using generic fault code readers and guessing at faults causes more time and money in the long run.

Your friends are correct when they say it is nothing to do with kwik fit, no more than an odd coincidence.

My guess would be the electroplate in the gearbox has failed, but that would be guessing. Get it on STAR, get some proper fault codes and descriptions and report back.

If you're looking for a London garage, Lodge garage in Colindale NW9 have handled all of my modern vehicles for years supremely well:

www.lodgegarage.com

Ask for Alain Bannon the director; they'll resolve everything for you professionally.

When the gearbox went on my S203 it was indeed a nasty experience.

Hope that helps
