Over the past 3 months I have been having a continouos problem of my car (C270 cdi) getting stuck in second gear. Normally I restart the car, then eveything is fine, however today I couldn't even use my tiptronic shifter to change it.

The car no longer resets as its stuck in 2nd gear(no tiptronic)

Any ideas what the problem might be please?

According to my recent experience, i.e. today, get your battery checked.

My '01 E320 locked itself in Limp home the other day, checked the battery (the orig one) and it was giving 288 rather than 450 - so replaced it.

This made no difference, still locked in 2nd.
Got the car transported to MB, and they have stated to me that it was OK when they got it, and no faults logged.

Could it take a couple of hours of the new battery connected before the fault would be cleared - or was the battery not the problem?

So, MB are suggesting that the new battery has solved it - anyone any other thoughts? (this is in a thread of it's own already!)

When a battery has a short circuit cell it can take the voltage down to below 11volts, this can cause problems sometimes known as starting blips where cranking the engine takes it even further down, the effect of this is to lock up certain parts of the car.

Always make sure that you have the full 12 volts at the battery before trying to fault find

Got mine back - it seems that the new battery solved my issues, and ***MAY*** have not needed it trip to MB if I had just left it with the battery connected for longer (4 hours?)

I hope your's is a simple a fix
