A Happy New Year to everyone!

My baby ( 2004 W203 C270 CDI saloon) has now completed 34,000 miles and I am sure is due to have the front pads replaced. I have her serviced at the local MB dealership but would like to afford to buy food after changing the front brakes. I have read all the threads and have come to the conclusion that Brakes4U seem to get the nod for quality including "greener" pads.
Has anyone any instructions for the procedure for changing the front disc and pads or can I get them from somewhere?

I am reasonbly proficient at auto stuff and my mate Dave always rescues me if I get too deep (rear spring change due to broken coil and poor instructions from MAD).
Help and advice please

The Key is 7mm all the info is hare for your car

OK here we go.
Tools, Axle stands with round tops,7mm alen key, mole grip large

Your brakes on the front are whats known as ATE calipers, and they are in the top picture in the link.
These must be removed from the stub axle in order to change the pads.

Safety is number one, so you need the axle stands as shown in the photo, with the round cup top. loosen the wheel nuts and jack the car, then place the axle stand immediately under the jacking point so the the rubber bung on the car fits into the cup, and lower the car onto the stand. then remove the road wheel.

First you must remove the sensor wires a discard , they are of the two wire type where one wire is cut, putting the warning light permanently on, until the pads are replaced. you just prise them out with a flat blade screwdriver.

On the inside of the hub there are two stand off pillars with rubber bungs in the ends, 55 in the link lower picture the unscrew the 2 screws 45.

You do need something that you can put the caliper on as it must not hang on the flexi hose. just lift it off, and the old pads can be taken out.

your car is quite new so OK to push the piston slowly back, ( lift the bonnet and take off the fluid filler cap and check that it will not over flow as the piston is pushed back (keep it off the car paint) put a large nut or socket in the hole in the piston, and use the mole grips to squeze the piston back so that it is flush, but use the mole grip so that the jaws are on the nut or socket so that no damage is done to the piston face.

Smear some copper grease around the face of the pistons and plates. Place the new pads back in the caliper and slide over the disc to the stub axle and re fit the screws, put a little Loctite on the thread or replace the screws with new ones. then re fit the rubber bungs

Fit the new sensor wires and the warning will go out, no STAR needed. refit road wheel then press the brake pedal to bring the piston back out before you drive the car.

Lateral thinking - It's a good time to take out 'Service Contract Plus', which would cover your costs for the work at a dealer and give you a comprehensive warranty as well. Only thing is I think you'd have to wait 3 months.

Guys,
Many, many thanks for your prompt help, especially Television who must have spent alot of time on the description. It must be something about a Merc that brings out all that is good in people.

Happy New Year and may your God go with you!

Malcolm,

How did you survive putting the axle stands and tools on the laid up dinner table?
You are a braver man than I would ever be!
