C270 Needs To Be "weighted"?

Hi all
I've just been to my local tyre shop and asked for tracking and balancing.
They said as much as they would like to do it they couldn't because Mercedes need to be "weighted" at a maindealer.
I also asked how much to replace my Low Profiles currently running on AMG Alloys, with ordinary tyres, again, it can't be done as I have to replace wheels and tyres so best to go back to Mercedes
Is this correct, I have many friends with Mercedes none have ever mentioned the "weighted" issue, are AMG alloys peculiar to low profiles only?
What do you think?

Tyres are 225 x 45 x 17.

I've certainly heard of the car being weighted whiel having tracking done - literally with things that are heavy.

I've alse seen the term used when a speader bar was fitted between the front wheels and that was described as weighting them (I presume that's done to replicate the wheels being under the force they'd normally when travelling on the road.

Your tyres are standard size anyway, if you want to put on higher profile tyres you will probably have to invest in some 16" wheels.
You could probably then go to 215/55 or 225/55 x 16, its a bit of a minefield this changing sizes and you can get it very wrong, probably need to speak to some good not cheap wheel sellers to get some options.

To get a 55 or greater profile with your 17" you would end up with 4 x 4 size tyres on the car and they would be fouling the arches.
The tyre shop are correct not to want to fit different sizes to your wheels, the only close size that springs to mind are 215/50 x 17 and your wheels may be too wide for the reduction in width.

What are you trying to achieve by changing the tyres? And do remember to inform your insurance company of any tyre size changes.

I am unhappy with the ride hieght which I assumed was because of the low profiles.

you might need to fit lowering springs with the 17s like the c-class sport

I actually wanted to go higher off the ground not lower so I thought "normal" tyres would give me the extra hieght.

Changing wheels and tyres makes no difference to the ride height. The car is designed for a certain diameter of wheel. How much of that diameter is wheel and how much tyre, is up to you but the overall diameter must remain fixed. So, bigger wheel, lower profile tyre to compensate.
Normal tyres and 16" wheels simply give you a nicer ride by providing more rubber in the sidewalls, they flex and soften the ride but by flexing, also soften the handling and reduce the 'sharpness' of the steering response.

As regards weighting down. AFAIK, Yes, officially it's a requirement. MB settings are taken, allowing for a certain load on the suspension. However, in reality, I've had tracking done many times without the weighting being done. Many garages will do this. How the dealer does the setup I don't know but they do seem to know how to charge for it. I was quoted over £200 the last time I asked. My local tyre dealer did it with their laser kit and charged me £25. She ran perfectly with the twitch at speed totally gone.

Perhaps the tracking issue has frightened your local people? I've found out on this forum that some mercs are devils to track due to 3 planes of adjustment.
Don't know if C270 comes into this category???
